When should I start studying for the SSAT? + SSAT Difficulty???

Okay so I’m kinda bad at taking tests like my school has Iowas every year and that I only score about average to above average, but for the school I’m applying to is Hotchkiss and I need at least a 85% on the overall score. My dad bought me 3 SSAT Practice books and I take the test on November 12th when should I study?? It’s about a month away.

I’m hoping to get a 90% or above for my overall score. And does anyone taking on the same day too? Any tips? My best . subject is probably Math the things I’ll struggle on is probably Analogies. I’ll probably do ok on the verbal and Reading so help please.

Actually, you have 2.5 months to go. You need to do some assessments now and find out what your areas for improvement are. Then streamline your prep so that you aren’t wasting time on things that you are already good at.

ITBS is a very different test with very different people being tested. People who tend to take the SSAT are pretty focused and are taking it because they want to and really care about their results. They may well also have tutors and and/or enrolled in SSAT test prep classes at their school. (My daughter had both.) She started the test prep class in 7th grade and then began studying and working with her tutor at the end of 7th grade, so that she worked for about 5 months befor taking it for the first time in the October setting.

Why not take the October test to find out what you need to focus on and get some experience? Then you can retake in both November and December if necessary. You don’t have to report your scores until after you receive them and don’t have to report any one test unless you want to.

Only focusing on one very competitive school without any test results may need to be rethought and your early test scores will help you evaluate whether this is a sound approach. As you know, you will also need strong academics and involvement and, hopefully, a hook that will give you a preferred status such as recruited athlete, legacy, etc.

Good luck!

I would definitely recommend taking the test two or three times because I have found that you can pin point your weak areas and better yourself in that category…I would start studying now :slight_smile: Good Luck!

Thank you for the reply! I don’t think there’s any prep schools for SSAT near me. I do go to Sylvan which is kind of like a tutoring thing but they don’t have a SSAT program there.
I bought SSAT practice books. I’m hoping to go a 90% or more on my score. I’m actually a swimmer too and planning to enroll as a swimmer.

@Laura003 Good Luck!

Reach out to the swim coach ahead of your interview. You can share your times and level of involvement. Ask to meet with s/he during your visit if possible.
