Where Do I Go From Here?

Classicist:

Georgetown does not reject Early Action.

And the one thing in my mind is....

If there was a committee of seven, and they voted on me...

Was the vote 3-4 or was the vote 0-7?

:: sigh ::

Georgetown has a defer or accept policy, c.

As for now, as the motto in a National Guard base I once went to said: "Siempre Adelante." -- Always forward. Starting today I'm going to resume my application cycle.. Counselor and teacher recs aren't a prob, but in the meanwhile.. :: sigh :: I wish I didn't have to go through all of this again.

As far as Georgetown goes, what are my options? From what I see..

a) I can hope for better SAT scores, which I think they are.
b) Ask my counselor to send ANOTHER letter, though I don't know what the contents would be. Maybe clarifying my academic situation? (FYI, I go to a socioeconomically disadvantaged school which is under imminent threat of state takeover)
c) Ask one of my teachers to send another letter, though I don't see much merit in this.
d) Write another essay on the World Affairs Council, describing what I've done to stay connected with International Affairs
e) Don't do anything.
f) Any other options?

Obviously, e is out of the question, but what else?

Tiaktan, Be sure to read TheDad's thread "Outcomes after EA/ED Rejection Last Year". There are many possible happy endings, only time will tell which one is yours.

I'll put in my two cents here, not that I'm an expert.... I don't think all deferrals are created equal, to judge from what I've observed.

We know a kid whose counselor was aggressive after a deferral and was told by the Adcom that they feared the Senior year schedule was a huge stretch, and they didn't feel comfortable admitting her without first semester grades... Assumption being here that anyone can get in to BC Calc and AP Physics if they bug the teacher hard enough, but surviving those courses is something else. She got an A in one and an A - in the other and was admitted in the Spring.

We know other kids who are convinced that their deferral from their parents alma mater was a polite, "you're not a loser but you don't make the cut" note... even kids with very high stats but no real hooks other than Legacy (double legacy, active parents, generous donors in one case...) We've seen kids get deferred and admitted after a huge lobbying effort (more recommendations, frequent notes, new awards) and kids get deferred and admitted with no effort whatsoever. A kid in our town was deferred and then denyed at an IVY after a local newspaper (which does show up if you Google his name...) quoted him talking about how he would die if it he wasn't admitted in April. People-- don't talk to the Press during admissions season-- you will inevitably be misquoted and sound like a pathetic loser, and any adcom can Google you!

I think it varies school by school and case by case. I think the GC is in the best position to get some insight into the application.... and then the student can decide what action to take (or if there's any action at all).

Thanks 1moremom, it goes give a beacon of hope, however.. the only mention of Georgetown is the person who was deferred, waitlisted, called back, and ended up going to UC Berkeley. :).

But I will keep the candle burning. I'm still a Hopeful Hoya.

As to where else I'm applying.

Yes, Marite, Bowdoin is on my college choice list.. I don't know if I said this before but they called me the day my GU deferral letter came.. And asked me if I had any questions about my application.. I told them I was sending one in soon, and that I was quite happy with the environment at Bowdoin.

Other colleges I'm now considering are NYU, Brandeis (they sent me a blue-ribbon application, I hate to waste their offer), Fordham (results will be coming in soon), UNC-CH (I'm not THAT good, they have an enormous EA rejection rate), UMich-AA (already accepted), Tufts, JHU (for their international relations programs, respectively), American, and maybe George Washington.

However, I still would have loved Georgetown. Still do love Georgetown. Will visit the campus in January. Praying for an April acceptance.

My mom wants me to start applying to a whole bunch of other T25 universities. I'm still a bit ... reluctant to do so. I want to apply to a college or a university where I can state my case in the best possible manner -- because a packet of application forms isn't going to do me any good. It doesn't show who I am...

Not that I have a choice in the matter.

Thanks a lot for your comments, blossom..

Well, my mid-year report was submitted sometime after the deadline (1 or 2 days later, our semester grades are done by 22 October).

Thanks a lot. My guidance counselor is on leave today, but he'll be back tomorrow. I'll ask him to call Georgetown and see what he can find out.

And if the parents are asking why I'm not in school, remember: I'm on vacation!

i'm not in school because i literally got sick from being deferred. sad, right?

tlak, my dad who lives in England has a friend in admissions....he called him today after I told him I was deferred. The friend said, as soon as he heard that I even applied EA, "she got deferred, right?" He says everyone gets deferred EA unless they're really sure Gtown is their #1, that's it. and he said there are a number of committees that read your app-- one athletic committee, one English, one science, etc etc. He says the committee that matters most is the endowment committee-- literally, how much money will you probably be able to give to the school as an alumni?

so not to fret, tlak. the guy says the qualified-- that's you and me-- will get in RD.

That 15% acceptance rate hangs ominously over my head (the 15% deferral acceptance rate)

Tlaktan:

UMich is a great place! Congrats on being accepted there. If you want more choices,
you already have a great list. Focus on those schools and don't fritter your efforts on more apps. My S had a great education at Wesleyan, but sometimes, I think nostalgically of Bowdoin. You'd have a great education there. But it sure is different from UMich!

Gosh, I'd pick Bowdoin over Georgetown any day of the week! (though that's just me....)

Yes, tlaktan, congrats on UMich. It is a great university. Ann Arbor is a fantastic college town!

babybird87 and tlaktan,
its a tough time of year - but remember that you're tough, too, and have accomplished a lot. Now (or in a couple of days) is the time to focus on those RD app's as December 31st (and January 15th) are just around the corner. You are a lot more accomplished in the fine art of the college application now than you were in the fall. Go for it!

Working on the Tufts application now. Any other recommendations for colleges?

I think I'll make this into a continuing saga of sorts.. lol.. follow my quest to try to get into Georgetown.

I did all I can for tonight. I will begin writing my update letter to GU tomorrow, as well as confer with my guidance counselor.

As for tonight, I began my applications to Brown (I like the school, visited once a long time ago and have a vivid memory of it), Vanderbilt (once again, from what I've seen and spoken with Vandy grads, it's a great school), and Tulane (couldn't hurt).

I know these schools weren't on my original list, but..

Also, Tufts.. I finished my application there, but I just need to fine tune a few components.

So, as a journey reminder:

** My Journey So Far **

University of Michigan at Ann Arbor - ACCEPTED
Purdue University - ACCEPTED
Auburn University - ACCEPTED

Georgetown University - DEFERRED
Note on Georgetown: I will send an update letter ASAP! Conferring with counselor.

Brown University - Superreach, I know, but I'll try applying anyway. My mom always encouraged me to apply to an Ivy, and who knows? Besides, out of the seven, this is the one I like the most. Part I is finished, $$ is paid.

Tufts University - Great International Relations program. Also love Massachusetts (the state in general).. Began application today, finished the Common Application part, will finish Part One tomorrow. Will pay $$.

Vanderbilt University - I'm applying to Vandy's poli sci program, and the Peabody College's Secondary Education program as a second choice. I'm exploring my options. =D.. I have my reasons for the Secondary Education program, though.

Peabody is one of the finest education schools in the country, certainly the best in the Southeast - also Vandy's most popular major is something that I think I remember them saying was housed in Peabody - one of these new odd non-major majors "Human Ecology" or "Human Management" or "Organizational Behavior" something that is pre-business, pre-law, pre-life, but sounds like you are farming people ;) - good luck, Tlaktan, your JROTC will be looked on favorably in the South, even at a place as "liberal" as Vandy.

Vandy's liberal? In TN? Hrm. Interesting. :)

Tlaktan, you should talk to Evil Robot (Exact screen name) on this board. He goes to Vandy and loves it. Evil Robot is from California. Do a search. In fact, he has recently posted stuff on the Parents forum.

His screen name is evil_robot these days. Maybe he has private messages turned on...

Sorry to revive an old thread of mine,

I got my SAT scores today:

So far..

May Composite SAT I: 680 V, 640 M (1320)
October Composite SAT I: 630 V, 660 M (1290, composite 1340)
December Composite SAT I: 700 V, 660 M (1360)

Oh well. :)

So, do the changes in the SAT affect anything, even though they were miniscule changes?

My verbal did go up only by 20 points (680 to 700), but for some reason, 700s have a different psychological impact than a 680..
