@Lindagaf As an aside, my S switched colleges late in the game and he sent a short email to his HS guidance counselor and the two teachers who wrote his recommendations to let them know. They all very much appreciated his note. May be something for your D to consider.
Wow, I wouldnât have guessed sheâs pick Bates that late in the game.
Congratulations
And do keep us updated next year.
Iâve been reading this thread for over a year! I started when your D & I were juniors, and now weâve both graduated! <:-P
I havenât contributed much, but itâs been exciting to read her journey! Congratulations, the best of luck to her!
And where are you off to @newjerseygirl98 ? Inquiring minds want to know!
@Lindagaf âFear not, I have a son going into tenth grade, so I will return, no doubt:-)â
I hope this doesnât mean youâre not going to be around to help in the fall with my D. If she ends up at colby, we live close enough to each other that we can consider a carpool!
La Salle University. Not a nationally-known uni, but still a great school! @LoveTheBard
Best of luck to you @newjerseygirl98 - their program looks very interesting!
Woozers. Exactly what I was trying to avoid with the Bates waitlist lol. Like I said before, you both have great tenacity, something that was sorely lacking for me after nearly a year-long college search process. Bates is a fantastic school (Kenyon never hit our radar due to location) and Iâm sure she will prosper there! Congratulations.
Quick updateâŠwe are still on vacation. D has a little downtime and is busy perusing the Bates catalog. She had some drama the day she after she left, calling Bates, trying to get her pin sorted, etcâŠbut it is fine now. She is hoping the six hour time difference works in her favor on the days she picks classes. Bwahahaha!
She is now excited about the mandatory camping trip for orientation. We forced her to climb an Alpine mountain and now she is ready for anything Maine throws at her. I will share all your good wishes with her, thanks!
I nominate @Lindagafâs daughterâs story for Episode #1 of âCollege Confidential - The Podcast.â
How did I miss this recent drama!? Our kids came so close to going to school together. That gosh-darn Bates WL!! Congrats. Hope everyoneâs feeling happyâŠ
National Geographic decided to weigh in on this. The answer may be, somewhere near Columbus, Ohio:
Hohoho, CC friends! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I have to update, because D just saw her grades and her GPA is 3.86! She thinks college is easier than high school. So thrilled for her.
D had a rough start at Bates. I think she had unrealistic expectations about meeting new people and she made a few mistakes early on. For a little while, I was concerned she might not return for the second semester. Things were not good, and I didnât want to update until there was something more concrete to report. But she now has a group of friends and seems excited about her classes next semester. Itâs been a learning experieince in more ways than one, and to be honest, it would have happened no matter where she had ended up.
There is a possibility she might end up transferring, because she thinks she might want to study a subject not offered at the school, but I donât think that will actually happen. If it does, thatâs fine too, as long as she is happy. I have to say that my other half and I LOVE Bates and I suspect she will end up loving it too. Hubby and I are in total agreement that it is the right place for her, which helps a bit when writing the check for tuition, ouch!
Hope you all have a great 2017, and I hope all your kids get into the best school for them.
ETA: To all parents of freshman, the first year can be rough for you and your child. Hang in there!
Thatâs great news, @Lindagaf! Impressive GPA, especially for a first semester when she wasnât very happy for a chunk of it. Glad you can breathe a little easier now, as I know we Mommas worry when our baby bears are suffering.
Thanks for update @Lindagaf so glad it all seems to be working itself out. My bet is she will choose to stay at Bates. Its a great school and she made it through the tough part, kudos to you both! And yes, great job on the GPA.
Congratulations to your daughter for doing so well, especially as the transition was tough. Thank for the update
@Lindagaf so happy to hear that things are going well!
@Lindagaf Thanks for the update and glad to hear things are going well.
@Lindagaf, Thank you for this update. I have enjoyed following your Ds college process. If you feel comfortable sharing, do you have any advice for kids heading to college next year from the lessons you and D learned to avoid some of the rough start your D experienced? Of course every kid will have an adjustment but I would love any tips you feel like sharing to make the transition less difficult. TIA.
That seems like a great idea for a separate thread, but hereâs the quick take: Stay open an donât expect to immediately replicate the kind of friendships and social crew that have taken you years to build up.
