... from an academic standpoint? That is, in terms of ranking, reputation (both regional and national), quality of applicant pool, selectivity, etc.

Much more selective (it’s already the #2 most selective public research university in Florida - we’ll gave UF a real competitive run in coming days…back to historic norms) and rated under US News #75 in overall national universities. FSU is already a US News top-50 national public university, expect improvement here as well. The reorientation to STEM and the huge investment in science infrastructure, combined with the NHMFL and materials science and engineering should start paying off with much higher ratings. Expect the same or fewer undergrads and perhaps a 33% or greater increase in numbers and quality of grad students.

If FSU could split from FAMU in engineering (something most alumni want to see happen) the ratings would be faster and higher.

Yeah the Engineering is an f’n joke and a lot of that has to due with the joint venture with FAMU.

Really, all that’s holding them back is Engineering and Med. The other big areas, biz and law, are doing well (although biz hasn’t nearly caught up with law yet, but by general standards the b-school is alright). Otherwise, the liberal arts are in place, sciences are doing pretty well and on the rise, etc.

Just out of curiosity, how do you think the retirement of Wetherell will change things? Do you think that if they install an academic president that we’ll see some drastic improvement within 1-2 years?

We have an excellent new and dynamic dean in business. Med will take time. Rome was not built in a day.

I feel like FSU, right now, is where UF was about 5 or 6 years ago. You know how UF is a difficult school to get into now? I think that in 5 years or so FSU will be the same. Not to say FSU is very easy to get into, but I do believe it will be as selective to get into as UF in a little bit.

I tend to agree. If FSU hires the right president we’ll be in very good shape given the current budget situation nationwide.

With Tuition Differential I see FSU & UF doing quite well in the years to come.

Also been hearing rumors from my FSU friends that they plan to kick off a billion dollar capital campaign in the next few years. FSU also has a solid alumni-base like UF.
