The silver lining is that for most folks, having a room mate is actually a very positive experience. My S has had his own room since he was 4 years old but thought he'd enjoy the experience of having a room mate & it has been a good way for him to meet folks he wouldn't otherwise. The cost of living in LA is pretty high & having a room mate really helps lower it. He's signed up to have a friend as his room mate for his sophomore year as well; most of his friends have also.
I don't think my S got his housing app in much before 5/1 last year & they still got good places to live. "Just do it."

How is fluor single?

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to live in a single (outside of legit medical problems and such issues).

College is about new experiences where you have to step outside your comfort zone, and confining yourself to a single just seems like a waste of an opportunity.

But hey, to each his own I guess.

Yes, I am inside of "legit medical problems and such issues." I agree that college is a place for "new experiences where you have to step outside your comfort zone" but my issue is directed related to my safety and no, I am not giving up my safety over whatever experience I might gain from staying in double rooms.

If you have legit health issues requiring that you have a single, you can register & work with the Disabilities Office at USC (or any other U). If your doc supports your condition IN WRITING and need for a single related to your specific medical condition IN WRITING, uSC will work with you, but best to work with them sooner rather than later, so you know where you stand & can make your choices accordingly.

Safety trumps all else, surely. That makes perfect sense. My post was more directed toward those who are, in my opinion, unnecessarily apprehensive about having a roommate.

I have quick question about housing: if I have a friend I want to be roomates with, but is out of the country until next week, should I still select a dorm/room first without putting his USC ID in, or should I wait until I hear back and ask for his ID, etc.? In other words, afterwards, can we request each other to be roomates? Because I don't want to be too late and be stuck with not so good choices.

If the stuff would be given after the deadline to declare roommates and such, then you should call someone at housing asap and make sure that everything will work out ok.

That actually happened to a friend of mine - he submitted his desired roommate info, but his roommates didn't submit the complete stuff in time, so they assigned some random roommates to my friend. He eventually got it all straightened out, but he had extenuating circumstances that required him to know+trust his roommates. Don't let that happen to you! :)

when do they let you know if you received your first choice or not?

can u guys help me w/ housing choices. i dont know what to put for the 4 choices on the housing app. i want to be able to socialize w/ others, but i like studying in my room where its quiet. so which places are nicer and have a quiet/social mix?

bitt3rswtcocoa, it seems like the consensus has been that new/north are the more social dorms, while birnkrant provides the quiet/social mix that you're looking for. if you're leaning more towards quiet, maybe an apartment/suite would be better.. and they are definitely very nice.

can i get a list of top housing choices for someone like me?

Once we put the credit card # in, can we change our housing-dorm preferences? I kinda want to get that started, but I haven't visted the campus yet (going April 22), and my best friend hasn't decided if he's going to USC too (if so, we'd request each other for roommates). And which dorm I want to be in really depends on that.

I keep fretting that I'm going to submit my housing application too "late" compared to everyone else...

I'd suggest Pardee was a good choice & balance between quiet & social, at least it met my son's requirements this year as a freshman.

My S submitted his housing app sometime in April & still got his 1st choice in dorms, Pardee, where he was very happy.

I just logged into the housing application website and the option to choose dorms is open again. The "rooms" tab is also available. Does anyone know why this is? Can i re-select my housing options or have i already been assigned a room since the option of "rooms" is available?

Bump... And also, if you live in the parkside suites, do you have to be a part of the international residential college special interest community?

Is it worth it to move into the dorms a day early?

So many questions here!

Okay, I paid the housing fee and am filling out the application form right now. If I don't want to "auto search" for a roommate, will USC automatically do it for me? There's someone who's a 90% match right now, but I don't know if I'm ready to commit so soon. So if I skip this step, will USC most likely match me up with him?

Also, though I wasn't a "Scholar" (was accepted into Global Leadership Program- GLP, however), I put down Marks Hall. I suppose that space permitting, I could be placed there? Thanks!

im confused... ive been filling out the housing app and i got to part 4 (Roommates).

It says : 'Applicants will be assigned spaces by TrojanHousing and notified via e-mail that their assignment is now on line and ready for review based on timelines listed in our literature and available on-line.'

There is a submenu labeled Auto Search but when i click on it i get a huge list of names of which i can see profiles but i can't do anything with the names. Do I have to wait until I get an email saying the house I was accepted to before I can do anything with regards to choosing my roommate?
