If you guys have filled out your housing/dining online forms, which dorm did you pick for #1? Is anyone living at home?

I picked Carmen coed

If you guys have filled out your housing/dining online forms, which dorm did you pick for #1? Is anyone living at home?

I picked Carmen coed

i chose a Furnald single as my first choice the a Harlty-Wallach single as my second choice.

I really cannot fathom sharing my room with another person.....I've been down that road, and it was not a fun or easy one!!!;)

john jay single 1
carman coed 2
hartley-wallach LLC single 3
carman same-sex 4
hartley-wallach double 5
furnald single 6
john jay double 7
furnald double 8

carman all the way....its not freshman year w/o a roomate

john jay single 1
furnald single 2
carman coed 3
carman same sex 4

and then i forgot the rest...

there is like a 75% chance that we get our first choice right?

that's what I've heard. Is anyone moving in early? My parents are annoying and are planning to fly us out a day before orientation to "avoid traffic"

I won't post my inane list, but i'll explain my bathroom-based ranking. Single vs. double is a matter of personal taste, and all of the first year dorms are in great locations, so I ignored those criteria. I figure that the biggest factor affecting quality of life is bathroom cleanliness and traffic-- it's difficult to be happy when your most holy sanctuary is filthy or you have to stand in line while a floormate hogs the shower.

Carman has the absolute best bathroom arrangement, with an unheard-of 4 people to a suite bathroom, which is still cleaned for you (as is the case in all first year housing)

In singles, the best you can do is a Hartley-Wallach LLC suite, with 10-15 people per coed bathroom. These babies are clean!

Furnald comes in third, single-sex bathrooms are shared with the entire floor, but there are only about 15 people to each one assuming equal gender distribution.

John Jay is last in bathrooms, with about 45 people using the 2 bathrooms on each floor.

These are just the rantings of an obsessive germophobe, so take them with a grain of salt.

i am also an extreme germ-freak ..... that is why Furnald is my first choice..... I reallu hope i get it.

I LOVE HARTLEY! I want to request it now. It bumped Carman down the list. I like Hartley better than Wallach, though. Maybe I will beg for Hartley. Then maybe I can do some cooking, mmm. I need to get my dad to teach me this summer. Then I will make friends fast, haha.

My new list is Hartley single or double, followed by John Jay.

And I learned an interesting piece of information. The carman air-conditioning. . . haha doesn't even turn on until May 16, AFTER graduation. I thought that was so funny.

"HARTLEY!"

can you explain the Learning Center thing? I have a family aquaintance who is living there now, but he's not a freshman. Is LC just a type of living arrangement (where ppl of different diciplines and ages live in a suite together) or are there "special activities?"

ppl seem to say that air-conditioning is unnecessary

Yeah a fan is fine.

There are special activities. Columbia gives students in that dorm money to put on activities. Some of them are concerts that would ordinarily cost a good deal of money at reduced prices for Columbia students. So if I wanted to go to a concert that doesn't give student discounts, I could make an activity to go to that concert and use Columbia funding to help lower the costs. That's one example I got from a student who lives there.

Hartley is fresh and soph w/ some juniors. Sometimes the different grades bond, and sometimes they don't as much. Depends. Ideally, it'll help a lot. I heard some stories about people in different grades becoming good friends.

I want to go to the grocery store to get some steaks, and I want to cook them in Hartley. I wrote Housing an email to request Hartley and to change my list. I ultimately decided I don't want carman that high up on my list. It was 2nd after John Jay and before LLC, but now both carman options are at the bottom.

My new list:
Hartley-Wallach, mostly Hartley, 1 and 2
John Jay 3 and 4 (s and d, resp.)
Furnald s and d 5 and 6
Carman co and si 7 and 8

Ah, well I think I'd thrive best in a social atmosphere. I've had my own room long enough. And what's college without a roomate? And even better, a whole building of freshmen being just that, freshmen

Carman co

JJ Single

JJ Double

Carman single sex (is there even an all-male floor? I know there's an all-girl one, but all guys? Whatever, Carman is Carman)

Hartley-Wallach double

Furnald Double

Hartley-Wallach Single

Furnald Single

I'm really undecided between single and double, and between Carman and Furnald, but I thought Furnald was a little nicer than Carman, but if I was going to have a double I wanted it in Carman, so I put:

Furnald single

Carman coed

Carman single

Furnald double
5, 6, 7, 8. Don't remember

I was undecided between a single or a double, so I decided to go with the following:

Furnald single

Furnald double

Carman double single sex (I think they only have all-girls floors jarahul, but im not 100% sure)

Carman double coed

JJ-s

JJ-d
7/8 ?

90% get choice in top two

what about waitlisters who just submitted their housing form? can we at least hope for top four or five?

I don't have any idea

bing: i called to ask this a few weeks ago, and was told that the assigments haven't been made, so we waitlisters aren't at a disadvantage.

supposedly.

I also confirmed that those off the waitlist are at no disadvantage for housing.

On that topic, though, have any other "waitlisters" received ANYTHING from Columbia? I've gotten absolutely nothing. I had to call to confirm that they even received my deposit.
