After applying to (and subsequently being accepted by) four schools, I am faced with a financial dilemma. It is because my top choice is out-of-state. Wishing to be an art major, studying art at VCU is a dream of mine. But total expenses would exceed $30,000 per year were I to go there. The other schools on the table are Appalachian State, UNC Charlotte, and East Carolina. For these three schools, I could expect to pay around $17,000 yearly (excluding inevitable tuition raises). Each of the four schools has certain likeable qualities that the other three cannot boast. VCU, however, remains my clear favorite. It's not that I would need to take out a ridiculous amount of loan to afford the university, as I have inherited a decent amount of money. But to pay expenses, I would need to nearly exhaust my resources- not a particularly attractive choice, especially in today's economy. What should I do? Should I go with my dream school even though it is just barely financially viable; or should I settle for an in-state university that will leave me in a better financial standing?

I think you would be better off at an instate school, VCU isn’t worth 30k a year.

Yes, you’re probably right. I have almost ruled VCU out several times, but I’m hesitant to take any schools off the table. Appalachian State looks very appealing to me, but I will talk to a financial aid advisor at VCU before making a decision.

I agree with barrk. Stay in-state, save your inheritance.

I would stay in state

If you really are committed to VCU look for independent scholarships. You fastweb.com to look for scholarships based on interests, intended majors, etc. There are MANY scholarships out there.
