Where to find cheaper textbooks for General Chem and Foundations of Biology?

Just wondering if someone know where to find cheaper textbooks for General Chem and Foundations of Biology than what they have at the pitt bookstores? I have the ISBNs but I can't seem to find them online (amazon, half.com, etc). Is it because it is a package? What did you guys do when you took the class? Any advice would be appreciated!!

BIOSC 150- ISBN: 9780558764395 (Biological Science-looseleaf pkg w/prac bio/2 PBS/I Click rebate) Author: Freeman. Copyright: 2011

CHEM 0110- ISBN: 9781111483562 (General Chemistry- Enhanced edition with access code) Author: Ebbing. Copyright: 2008

I was able to buy the Ebbing text online last year very easily. I’m not sure about the bio text because I didn’t use that one. Some of the bio professors like to have custom made packages of the bio texts only available at the bookstore (which includes a clicker to be used in lecture), in that case you should get the custom made package.

You probably wouldn’t be able to find that bio text on half.com or Amazon for much cheaper anyway because it appears to be a brand new edition. The chem text looks to be the one I used and you could get that edition for $70-100 on half.com depending on when you order it during the summer.

I have the exact same problem. I found multiple books on Amazon but I am not sure if it is the exact book that I need because the ISBN numbers dont match and I cant find it anywhere on the internet. I am also attending Pitt and need to find both my bio 0150 book and Chem 0110 book. Are there pictures anywhere to show me exactly what the cover of the book will look like?

We used the ninth edition of Ebbing for chem and it looks like they’re still using that edition. It’s got a red and black cover with different color flames on it. The ISBN numbers don’t match probably because it’s got something extra bundled with it but I don’t recall using whatever extra that came with the chem text.

The bio text you’re probably better off buying from the bookstore. However, keep in mind that most people don’t get their books until they’re at Pitt anyway. You could always go into the bookstore and take a look at what the book looks like.

The Got Used Bookstore site sometimes has the covers of the books available.

If a text is wrapped in a packet of books (bundled), it will have a different ISBN than the book by itself. The ISBN is generated by the publisher for the bundle.

The only problem with waiting until you get there is that then there is not time to order them. It can take two weeks to get a book.

thanks for all the help!

Amazon’s offering a year of Amazon Prime to all college students (register with your .edu address) which means you can get free two day shipping on all eligible items or upgrade it to one-day shipping for $3.99. Just wanted to let people in this thread know if they are worried about it taking too long for their ordered books to get to them.

Need help and advice. Sounds like Pitt has bundled packages for classes making it impossible to search and find books at other websites. We are interested in first year engineering books: Chem 0960/13918, Econ 0100/12862, Engr 0711/19990, Math 0240/10064 and Phys 0174/13240.

Question is…is it safe to search for textbooks by title, author and publish/copyright date and not worry about the Pitt special package? What comes in these packages in addition to the textbooks? Anyone with experience buying books for Pitt at sources other than the Pitt bookstore?

(I have saved substantial amounts for my older daughter buying books on-line/used versus the school bookstore, never had issues trying to match ISBN’s.)

I’ve never had issues buying books off Amazon using the author’s name and title of the book. I buy the latest edition available and it is the version the Pitt bookstore has. The special stuff they bundle with the textbooks – I don’t believe they are needed as ds only used the textbook itself. I don’t believe the use books (if you choose that option for the Pitt bookstore) comes with the bundled stuff – you just get the text book.

Jk26045: I bought all my ds freshman engineering book off Amazon – the only thing we did not buy was the lab manuals. This is the third year I have done this so he has all the books for all his classes except the lab manuals.

I was able to find several books by just putting the ISBN in the Google search bar. The good news for those of you having trouble is that for about half of my daughter’s books, there was very little price difference for booksellers that are getting shipping.

However, I was a bit nervous because one of her texts has an enclosed CD, and her response was that no one uses the CD, “so just order it, Mom.” Another of her classes has a text package, so I told her to order it from the bookstore. I think that the bundled additions will vary greatly with each class.

Last year, her first year, we just ordered everything from the bookstore to make it easy. Textbook cost is somewhat dependent on whether the prof is using the lastest edition.
