Do you understand that the lower SAT averages for state schools are for IN STATE STUDENTS?? DO YOU ACTUALLY think that it's as easy to get into Berkeley as franklin and Marshall just because they have similar SAT averages.. stop KIDDING!

And here we're NOT talking about LACs.. he's applying to EMORY, JHU: POPULAR large universities..

AND WE ARE NOT stopping anyone from applying

wohooo........this discussion is being hot minute by minute..............aj16 you have applied to those schools..............keep on posting your results and we will see ........its better than inflating/deflating your chances........I say u have pretty good shot at all of them........(BE CONFIDENT MAN......U HAVE ALREADY LOST YOUR CHANCE TO APPLY TO YOUR DREAM SCHOOL(CORNELL) BECAUSE YOU LACKED FAITH IN YOURSELF). It is injurious to be overconfident but fatal if u dont have confidence despite being competent.........ciao

^^^^ yeah i know guys calm down its just a blog...

As of now im jus accepted at Penn State University...they sent me a letter less than a month from when i filled in the application

and cj_svu6 can you tell me how you assorted my list of universites...im finding it really confusing how you can say NYU Stern and JHU are matches but BC and Emory are reaches....or do you mean them the other way around?

aj16: At the end of the day, we are in no way qualified to rate your chances. All I can say is: hope for the best, and only the results will represent the truth.

it all doesnt depend on the SAT, dude whats ur gpa? how are ur recs? and many other factors. being international doesnt help much because India is not a minority.

Ah, but being an international student who's not seeking aid might pull for you a bit...diversity and all that stuff...although I must say that being an Indian certainly has its cons in this aspect :)

well im very sure my essays recs and ECs were truly outstanding...
in fact my interviewer for georgetown ( who was actually quite a tuff guy ) said that iv focused focused on on mu Ecs and community servie...
My recomenders spoke about my extensive community skills and leadership skills ( including the time when i was vice-daptain of a project group that came second in class )
Frankly my GPA is not that great but not bad either....and there were certain family and personal reason explaining why i dint do well in certain exams...i already explained that to all universities....
im just waiting for april when itll all be over...thanks alot guys....

P.S. isaacnewton...why should i apply there??

lets change the topic of the thread a bit....if you'll had these stats and wernt asking for any financial aid where would you want to apply?? what would your list look like?

Truest words ever. Where there is faith, there's no fear. :)

Me? Well I am interested in LAC's so my list would predominantly consist of LAC's and small universities. With those stats I'd be looking at Macalester, Oberlin, Colby, Bates, Bowdoin and Carleton as matches, something like Pitzer as a safety, and Brown, Rice, Dartmouth and Pomona as reaches. But I'm interested only in small, undergrad-focussed, intimate, quirky schools where students learn for the sake of learning, and not to lay their hands on the most profitable job. But with those stats, this would be my list.

i think you will get into most of the places you applied to...had a friend who applied to Villanova with similar stats and he offered to pay full...not only did he get in but he got about $20000 in scholarships

btw, in Franklin and Marshall, there are 68% out of state students, meaning they come from a different state..
if i were not asking for aid, and i had your kind of scores:
half of the college list would be reduced, as state unis don't give aid
all other colleges would definetely be reaches, as most people who ask for aid and are accepted at these colleges have a SATs of over 1400,possibly in the high 1400s....
THIS is true=>There are no good safeties for international students asking for FINANCIAL AID. Several of my friends, and myself, who had good scores were not accepted by top schools because we were asking for aid. All of myfriends, and some of the people from my country, Nepal., here's a few stats:
The one who got accepted at Reed got accepted nowhere except for Reed, same case of a guy at Wesleyan, a guy at Williams, a guy at Lafayette(although accepted by JUB, coz its need-blind to all), and the same is elsewhere, i presume.....
so finances are a huge deal to any college, in terms of enrolling international students....

don't apply to JUB,
because it wouldn't value your 50k per year,
I am with trans_int007 all the way
FINANCES + International student = the one most important thing!
people like you(who don't need FA) may have lets say 5 matches, 4 reaches and 1 safety college..
For people like us, poor people like us,,, WE have 1 safety, no match colleges and 10+ reach! even "simple-match colleges become high reach for us)
FINANCES matter a great DEAL!
If I were in your shoes--------I'd apply to even better universities!!

bah all this stuff I'm hearing makes me wish I had applied to some ivy league unis and UC's too.. is it really that much easier if you can pay for everything? I hope I get into USC atleast :@ damn i should've applied to some schools that offer aid to internationals so that I can stand out over there atleast.. it's done now anyway, so yeah :|

S33D Im feeling the same thing as you are....and im hoping to get into USC.too....the reson why iv always liked this college is because i know i can get in...What are your stats btw?? ( i just wanna gauge the competition )

And frankly you guys are forgeting that im Indian....I myself know quite a few people who are not asking for aid and have similar if not better stats than mine( altho they were from Dhirubhai Ambani School which has possibly some of the smartest and richest kids in India)..Iv tried carefully to apply to unis that they wernt applying to but i will face quite a bit of competiton...I know that for a fact

I have a lower SAT score than yours, 620 CR + 660 M + 700 W = 1980. However, I have excellent IB predicted scores (41/45 with 4 HL subjects, including Physics, Chem and Maths) and hopefully this will mean something to USC. Excellent (Don't really know whether I'm a good judge of it though) recommendation from my physics teacher also, and am ranked 1st in a class of 32 students :S Decent EC's but they're mostly just run-of-the-mill activities.

Can't really judge my essay. Wrote it myself and didn't want to get it checked by anyone since I wanted to go through this whole process myself and it was also kinda personal. Chose the 3rd topic (Newton's law one). Think it's decent atleast, though.
