Where would you go: UCSB or UCD?

I'm deciding between these two schools as a bus. econ/econ major, respectively. I'd just like to hear some outside opinions on which school you'd choose.

they are about the same caliber but ucsb is a lot prettier plus it’s on the beach. oh and lots of cute girls (unless ur not a guy) haha. i would personally choose sb over davis.

UCD. Closer to the Bay Area, and I hear the party scene isn’t as obnoxious. I really don’t want to go to a huge party school. Maybe if I were younger.

i went to UCSB last saturday and i was completely blown away by the beauty and the atmosphere. it is a paradise! Davis is in sacramento! disgusting. lol. NO OFFENSE (im new here please dont beat me up.)
Choosing between UCLA and UCSB was truly a difficult decision because picturing my life in Santa Barbara with my dorm SECONDS away from the beach…my dorm would be beachfront property…it made it a very tough choice. and they have a cute bike path that everyone on campus rides their cute lil beach cruisers on.

i recommend you visit Santa Barbara. and then make your choice.

Both their Econ programs are comparable so you should be thinking about factors like the school itself. And even then both schools are tied in rankings too.

My bestfriend is bus econ/econ at UCSB and he’s having a *ing blast. My friends at Davis generally have the same complaint: Davis is boring as *. Santa Barbara is Santa Barbara. There’s a reason students from schools all over (myself included) come there to party and have a good time.

However, that may not be your thing. If you want quiet time to study then Davis might be for you.

Out of those two, I would choose UCSB. I am a total city girl and I would end up bored out of my mind as UCD. UCSB is in a fantastic area and is close enough to take a road trip to LA or to the bay area if you need to get away.

I highly recommend that you visit both campuses if you haven’t already. I was dead set on going to a Uni in San Diego and was very disappointed when I visited UCSD. You have to go where you feel the most comfortable and the only way you will know is if you visit the campus. It’s a very personal decision. Don’t make the mistake of transferring somewhere you have never been. Good luck.

I didn’t get the vibe that UCD was a bad place to be socially. Seemed like it was what you made of it.

I feel like I’d enjoy being at either school, yet I probably won’t make it down to UCSB to see it with my own eyes. The descriptions are great though.

The thing keeping me from deciding seems to be the fact that I grew up in Sacramento.

Yeah, I get that people like to party, and love the beach, but UCD isn’t completely devoid of social life. I’ve lived on the beach my whole life and I don’t think UCD is that bad. It’s an hour away from S.F., so you can go out to a real city and have a great time. The Sierra Nevadas are also right there, so the skiing and snowboarding is much better, and Reno is kinda close too so you have gambling. Right around the campus is a small college town, and that has it’s own benefits. The people I’ve met who attend UCSB are kind of ******y white kids who obsess with partying even after they can just head out to bars and have a better time. It’s more of a college for teenagers than it is for people into their 20’s.

Blocko-the reason I say that you should go and visit is from personal experience. Based on my experience, a visit can either make or break a campus for you. In addition to what I said above about UCSD, Berkeley was actually last on my list because I had never visited and didn’t really know what they had to offer. I hate to admit it, but I only applied because of the prestige factor and, quite frankly, I wanted to see if I could make the cut. I quickly realized how stupid my attitude was and decided to take a trip up to the bay area in December. If I could describe it to you in any way, I would say this. It felt like I had no water to drink my entire life and stumbled upon an oasis that was calling my name. Needless to say, Berkeley became tied with UCLA as my #1 choice.

I know that it is expensive (and time consuming) to travel to visit a campus, but believe me, it’s crucial. I work in the transfer center at my CCC and I can’t even tell you how many students come back to community college after transferring to a Uni they aren’t happy with in order to fufill pre-reqs for another school. If you are unhappy, you won’t do well academically. Grab the Greyhound or the Amtrak and get to UCSB ASAP, even if it’s a quick turn around trip. You will be glad that you did and will be able to make your decision with a clear conscience.

I’ve partied in SB and it’s wayyy fun… But personally I couldn’t get anything done if I went to school there because there I would be side tracked all the time. Their campus is gorgeous but the biggest down side I saw SB is that it’s next to a town of rich people and there can be some downsides to that. And as for the living situation… if you live off campus at ucd you can find a room to yourself for around 600. At ucsb, livingin IV, you’re going to be paying around 675 to share a room. That was a huge issue for me.

There’s some places where you can get cheap rooms to yourself too. I lived at 5689 Picasso (holler!) where it was two small bedrooms (each suited for one person) for $700 each roommate. The room was pretty small but it got he job done.

Just Visit both places. Every person is different. Although for most college students UCSB would be better because its on the beach, tons of girls, and tons of parties, thats not the scene everyone is looking for in the college environment. If you interested in a more calm environment and dont want to become an alcoholic, go to Davis. Its a personal choice
