I've taken the ACT twice before and have realized that I need a private tutor. I didn't do to bad (29) but do need to improve and so I've been looking at tutors online. So far I've seen that Kaplan, the Princeton review, and study point are major ones in my general area. Which one should I go with and/or are there better ones that you've seen or heard of? I'd love to hear personal experiences with any because 100+ an hour would be a huge waste if I truly won't get anything out of it. Thanks!

The course materials used by the companies you listed are all very similar. What makes a significant difference, however, is the teaching format (private instruction vs. classroom) and the skill of the teacher/tutor.

The approach that makes the most sense?
Seek out word-of-mouth referrals for the best tutors in your local area from friends and older students at your high school.

FWIW, over the years I’ve worked at several different test prep companies (PR, Studypoint, ETS, “boutique”). Many of the teachers working at those companies were poorly trained and had embarrassingly little teaching experience. The instructor/tutor turnover rate was high on account of the low pay ($20/hr + small incremental bonuses) and nonexistent teacher training.

Good luck with your search…
