Hey peeps,

When flying to/from Princeton area, which airport is better to fly into/from? Philadelphia, La Guardia, JFK, or Newark airports? Which is less confusing? Which is easier to find/get out of when driving?

Hey peeps,

When flying to/from Princeton area, which airport is better to fly into/from? Philadelphia, La Guardia, JFK, or Newark airports? Which is less confusing? Which is easier to find/get out of when driving?

I'd like to know as well. :) (Although I'm probably going to fly to Philadelphia this fall, since I have relatives who can pick me up from there/let me stash my stuff at their place if I get there early.)

Don't know about Philly, but Newark is definitely closer than LaGuardia and JFK, especially when there is traffic in and around New York City.

I think there is public transportation from Newark Airport to Newark, with convenient transfer to NJ Transit, which (after another convenient transfer in Princeton Junction) brings you right to the campus.

I think Philly is much easier to get in and out of than Newark. When you come out of Philly if you're driving, you take 95N and from there it is a piece of cake to get to Princeton.
On the downside there is not a handy van service from Philly to Princeton like there is to and from Newark Airport (Princeton Airporter). You could take the train from Philly airport to center city and then take a train to Princeton Junction and then take the dinky to Princeton. No where nearly as convenient as the Princeton Airporter which goes right from Newark Airport to Nassau Inn on Palmer Square.
Bottom line if you're renting a car and driving to Princeton from an airport, Philly is much easier to navigate. If you're taking public transportation from the airport to Princeton, I think Newark is easier.

Yes, the train takes you directly from Newark Airport to campus, with one transfer. Although the students bargain shop their own fares, they try to fly out of Newark because it is so easy. http://www.princeton.edu/main/visiting/travel/

Newark by far. It's cheaper to go from the airport to campus by train (without the ridiculous transfer you have to make at Trenton between Philly and Princeton Junction), and it's closer. I flew into JFK when I first arrived in NJ, and I will never, ever do that again.

I'll second shelly-- if you are driving, philly is much easier and much closer, however if you are you taking mass transportation, Newark is much easier, just take the train.

there is mass transportation to philly (nj transit to trenton, septa to 30th st, septa to the airport) but its not as simple. JFK is also doable, although not at the beginning of the year with all the luggage (train to NY, train to JFK)

I know the area, and Newark is your best bet because it is the closest airport and travelling from it to P'ton will not require going through any big city. You can always take a cab from the airport to Rrinceton

Newark is closer than Philly. Also, with Philly you have to go through metropolitan Philly to get to Pton. Way too much traffic during rush hours. I think Newark is more reliable.

D flies from SFO to Newark on Continental mostly - once she flew United to use miles. Good fares, good schedules on Continental. Then the train is an easy way to get to campus, wind up at the Dinky station near Forbes and Butler.

Newark is the best. When we travel/have people to visit, we prefer Newark. There is a shuttle that goes between Newark and Nassau street(making stops on campus and Palmer Square), so luggage won't be a hassle on the train. It's cheap too - 19 dollars for PU students.

Yeah....Newark gets my vote.

Forget JFK unless you just have to experience Brooklyn's Belt Parkway, although you could stop in Coney Island and hit the Original Nathans.

PHL is not bad - 4 trains vs 2 trains for EWR, but fares are much cheaper than EWR.

Newark all the way. Never again am I flying into JFK.

can you fly to Kolkata from EWR?

not directly no but then again, you can't fly anywhere directly from Calcutta (with the exception of London but that's about it :p)

you can fly directly to delhi (i believe Continental does nonstop), and catch a connecting flight to kolkata. also, i too found newark the most convenient in reaching the pton campus. with luck i'll make the trip again in the fall :)

EWR: Airtram from terminals to NJ Transit, train to Princeton Junction, Dinky (small back and forth to campus train) to downtown Princeton and campus, probably around $15.

Newark is best, but dont completely dismiss JFK, especially if you are traveling light and JFK would get you either a much cheaper flight and/or more convenient arrival time from wherever you are coming. From JFK you can take the Airtrain to Jamaica Station, then the Long Island Railroad to Penn. Station and then you catch the same train that you would from Newark. It will add about an hour or a an hour and half and about $20 on to your trip. But if you are flying from someplace that has cheaper and more frequent flights into JFK than Newark and you dont have a ton of luggage, it might be worth considering.

Thanks everyone, for all your responses, helps and hints! We are definitely changing our travel plans seeing how everyone thinks Newark is the best and most convenient. And thanks Shelley and ec1234, Philly makes sense if we get a car rental.
