Which calculator is good for math majors? I would like to purchase one this summer for my pre-calc course, and AP Calc AB next year (senior year), and still be able to use it in college majoring in math. Which one do you recommend?

ti 89 titanium

That's what I have <3

me too :) 89T until something else comes out, or just buy mathematica

yeah def go with the 89......83/84 is for algebra...but if ur serious about math and engineering related fields...theres none better than 89!!!

sadly i only have the 89...but im happy with it (the 89T has a strange shape thats a turnoff...i prefer the classic TI models)

I want to be able to use the TI-89T for 5 years. Will it last that long through college?

What is mathematica? Is that a calculator? I also heard of MatLab. What are these?

I actually don't like the 89. The interface seems weird for most normal applications, and the type is too small.

Also, keep in mind that you can't use it on the ACT. (If they don't catch you at the door and you continue to use it during the test, they can disqualify you).

Yeah, I was going to say that.

I see no problem with an 83+. Remember that you could always lose your calculator or something could happen to it. If I go to higher level math in college, I'll buy an 89 then. But for now, my 83+ with my Staples coupon ($10 off and a free case!) will suffice.

We aren't allowed to use 89s in AP Calculus AB. If my teacher spots us with one on a test, we get a 0 automatically. And in Algebra II and Precalculus, most teachers show you how to use all the necessary functions on the 83+ model; they probably won't be able to help you with an 89. So if you have a problem on a test, you're screwed.

Check with your teachers first.

I think I'll wait until college before I buy the 89T then.

Mathematica and MatLab are computer-based math programs that (so I heard) many college students use.

In my precalc class, we can't use any kind of graphing calc on tests. We have a class set of graphing calcs, some old version, that we use on occasion, but our teacher is willing to help us with our newer ones :)

go with the 89 titanium if you are science and math oriented. it is easy to use (you need to get used to it first though) and has a lot of power. it will last you till grad school, I think. You can use it on the SAT and the AP exams and such.
Many teachers (my math teacher included) don't like us using it because it has a mode in which it will give you answers in fractions. They think that having such a powerful calculator hinders with your math abilities. But if you are good at math you will do good with whatever calculator you use. Many TI 89ers have the lowest grades in our class.
However, i would definitely recommend you buying TI-89 if you are looking for something that will last you till grad school and if your school allows you to use it. If not, buy the TI 84 silver or TI 86. TI 84 is particularly good for science as it as sig fig calculator and a lot more preloaded applications

haha the kids that have ti 89 in my calc class have the highest grades

thecomisar~if you were talking to me, we only got to use calculators on 10% of all our tests. My teacher makes us turn off the exact answer mode. last year in Algebra 2, we got to use calc's on all of our tests. i got equally good grades if i used a 89 or a 84. the 89 doesn't guarantee you an A. you need to have brains to get that. TI 89 is more easier to use and such

ti-83+......... whoo.
maybe silver if you wanna be bold.

yes, we're allowed to use 89's in calc (only me and 1 other person have them). It's great. Big help on MC tests. I also like mathematica. Also, i would like to rec MathType for typing math problems (probably come into play in college more so than HS). My math teacher gave it to me for a presentation I was typing and it's great. You can get a free 30 day trial, too (and keep the trial version).

I have a TI 83 silver and an 86, as well, but my 89T is my favorite :).
