Hey I just got accepted into Rutgers New Brunswick and am going into the School of Engineering. I was wondering what campus I dorm on. I am mainly looking at Douglass, Cook and Livingston. But I know that I'll probably have classes on Busch so I was wondering if it would conflict to much if I go anywhere else. Any advice? A

Just go with Busch. You can dorm at Mattia (all guys) or Barr (mostly all engineering, boys + girls)

Is there any reason why you would like to dorm on C/D or Livingston?

I’m a girl so Mattia isn’t an option, which is why I was kind of attracted to Douglass and I also heard it was quieter and nicer, while I heard Livingston was where more freshmen dorm so I thought that would be a good place to start

My son’s roommates are engineers and they live on Cook. They have to get up -very- early on some days to catch the bus to Busch. They only chose Cook because their lottery number wasn’t good enough for Busch or Livingston.

I would recommend engineering majors choose Busch for freshman year so that they get to meet fellow engineers and build a support network early. Otherwise, Livingston would be good as it is convenient to Busch (5 min bus ride) and it is the second choice for many engineering majors. C/D would be my last choice.

At this point, you may not get Busch as freshman housing is prioritized by who applies earliest. You would probably get Livi if it was your second choice. ymmv of course.

Thanks! That helps a lot :]

I’m actually leaning towards Livingston now because (and don’t take this the wrong way) but I keep reading that Busch is predominately Asian/Indian and I’ve been having to hang out with the Asian/Indian “cliques’” all through high school. I know there are more ethnicities on Busch but I feel like Livingston will give me more diversity and introduce me to different people.
My only worry is about the buses. I know you said its just 5 minutes but I’ve read that it can depend… and I also want to meet other engineers and build support so is more important (along with not worrying about being late to class or anything) than the diversity of fellow freshmen I’m looking for? I can’t decide :/

I’m in SEBS and over on C/D, but I have some engineering friends and this is what I get from talking to them. Busch is mostly Asian/Indian guys, but there’s no reason you can’t join clubs or activities to meet other people. I personally don’t hang out with any of the people in my dorm, all my friends come from my various clubs and sports team. The engineers I know find it really helpful to have other engineers close by to study or do work with, though. Most first year engineers have all the same classes so it makes sense to be with people who can help you out if you’re getting stuck on a problem.

The stereotype might also be a little exaggerated. I know 4 engineers personally and none of them are Asian/Indian and three of them are girls. They’re all freshman and live on Busch and really like it.

As much as I love C/D, I wouldn’t recommend it to an engineering major. I’ve also heard that the commute between Livi and Busch is a lot longer than you would think. Apparently the B bus is really inconsistant. Busch is really your best option as an engineer.

“I’m a girl so Mattia isn’t an option, which is why I was kind of attracted to Douglass and I also heard it was quieter and nicer, while I heard Livingston was where more freshmen dorm so I thought that would be a good place to start.”

Mattia isn’t the only dorm on Busch. There is Metzger, Barr, Allen, Davidson, BEST, McCormick, and Winkler available for Freshmen. As you have stated, Douglass is mostly populated with girls, but the dorms I heard were in bad conditions. Don’t decide your campus by the way it looks. Also, Busch is about 50% Caucasian, 40% Asian, and 10% other; it’s definitely not mostly Asians.
