I took AP Chem exam and I'm pretty sure I got a 4 or 5 so I'm wondering (in case I get a 5) what level chem I should take. I'm thinking about chem 102/102L because a lot of people say not to take organic chem the first year. Is this a good idea? If so, does anyone who has taken the class or heard about it know the good professor(s) for this class?

getting a 4 or 5 places you out of Chem 101/Chem 101L only. So, you still have to Chem 102 before you can take Orgo which like Chem 272. I got a 4 on the AP Chem but I decided to start with Chem 101 because I heard how hard Chem is at UNC. So, I just wanna make sure i am ready for the upper level chem classes

Are you sure? I was looking at this website for placement credit: [Placement Credit](Credit Rules - Undergraduate Admissions)
It says that getting a 5 exempts you from Chem 102/102L as well.

^ they have honors level seminar type course that is a buffer between 102 lvl and orgo. It’s intended to prevent indecisive and unprepared student to take a leap too erroneous the first year. The honors is hard, no matter, and has its share of difficulties as Orgo does.

Oh, that sounds like the kind of class I’m looking for! Thanks! Do you know what it’s called?

^ i don’t remember the class name unfortunately. However, are you sure you want to take that class, since you did take chem a few years/time back. It is usually advised that you not do honors, as it does make students get out of the program after they realize they don’t remember some of the important concepts/base themes.

Well if it’s not as difficult as organic chemistry (and I have to take organic chemistry for pre-med) then it would give me a good sense of whether I’m cut out for the major. Yes, I took AP Chem this year so it’s still pretty fresh in my mind. I don’t want to burden my freshman year by taking organic but at the same time, I don’t want to be learning the same chemistry that I did in high school because that’s just wasting time/money. Or is it more difficult than organic since it’s honors-level?

My S took the honors chemistry the first semester of his freshman year. It was a challenging class and not a repeat of high school chemistry. He was an A chemistry student in high school and got a 5 on the AP exam. He ended up with a B in the honors class. There were students who failed the class…these were students who also had a 5 on the AP exam.

Actually I would recommend you take the normal 101/102 sequence, unless you’re dead set on being a chem major. PM me for details.

Do NOT take orgo freshman year. Bad, bad, bad idea. I agree with starting over and taking the normal 101/102 sequence.
