Which companies recruit at Mich? Is there a list?

My daughter told me that Goldman Sachs and General Mills have been around the campus this week.

Is there a list of companies that recruit at Mich that can accessed online?

How effective is the career center in helping students find jobs?

are you talking about companies that recruit at the b-school?
if you're not in the business school, you really won't be accessible to the business career services and all of the workshops and events they have.

anyways, we have lehman brothers coming in tonight :]

this link shows the top hiring companies:

and go here for the 2005 employment profile.

forgiven, those are great links. Unfortunately, my kid is a LSA student (math major).

Those undergrad business schools really don't get strong job results--LOL.

I noticed that too. ------ lol

I didn't know they updated the employment profile for the Class of 2006. They're relatively consistent from year to year. I heard the Lehman Brothers presentation was a waste of time. How was it?

Anyway, for dstark:

http://www.math.lsa.umich.edu/career/

If he's in the actuarial math program, he will have no problems at all.

Goldman Sachs and most IBanks recruit heavily on campus, but as Forgiven points out, the primary point of contact is the B School or the CoE. LSA students must make an effort, but they too are recruited heavily judging from the number of LSA students who get offers from the major IBanks and MCs.

redhare317, thanks for the link.

redhare17, do your undergrad grades matter if you want to become an actuary?

Are you a business or math major?

for some reason, all of my friends in LSA are either pre-med, pre-dental, pre-vet, or pre-law.

forgiven, well, I guess you don't know my kid. Do all your friends have high gpas?

I think there was something sent out to the math majors mailing list about this a few days ago, but I deleted it...I'll see if I can have somebody forward me another copy.

dstark, is your kid a freshman?

No. A junior.

Quants should be high in demand for their math skills. They can do things in quantitative finance that business majors can't do. (I'm a business major, btw.)

If he feels like he's not ready for the financial world yet, he should get a masters in financial engineering, which covers advanced financial math. The prerequisites are strict, making this program suited for math and engineering majors. These graduates should be high in demand. I-banks and hedge funds need quants to do the advanced math analysis. So actuarial science isn't the only way to go.

Here's probably the best program around:

http://business.tepper.cmu.edu/default.aspx?id=141030&Source=cmu

Do you think its worth it going to these corporate presentations as merely a sophomore (in the bschool)? Is this a way to get a summer internship?

I don't think the OCD likes us sophomores very much...

we won't really have access to career resources if we're bba sophomores. i asked a lot of the staff and the advisors, and they said they want us to concentrate on grades and not worry about getting internships this summer. they say we should just get an internship for junior year, but screw that.

we're just gonna have to find them independently.

Co-Next is a Women's Initiative at the Ross School of Business. They
have planned an amazing networking event for women of all majors and top
industry leaders.

THE EVENT IS FOR ALL MAJORS NOT JUST BUSINESS MAJORS

The companies attending are the top in their industries:

Consulting: McKinsey, Bain & Company, A.T. Kearney

Investment Banking/Finance: Goldman Sachs, UBS, Deutsche Bank,
Microsoft, Ernst & Young

Marketing: Unilver, Microsoft

Accounting: Ernst & Young

Each firm will have representatives who wants to talk to YOU. This is a
great opportunity for those of you who aren't sure yet what you want to
do, and I would highly recommend taking advantage of any opportunity you
can to practice networking.

Plus, there's free food!

The event takes place October 4 from 5-8pm. But you need to sign up
quickly because there is a Fireside Chat this Monday, September 18 at
5:30pm in room 4448 in the Psych Building of East Hall, that you need to
attend in order to go to the networking event. At the Chat, the head of
Women's Initiative, Mary Hinesly, will be speaking and answering
questions. She is truly an amazing woman with so much experience in the
business world, and she has a ton of connections (so even if you don't
want to work in the industries mentioned above, she is a fabulous person
to talk to about potential careers, and I would recommend going to the
Fireside Chat just to hear her speak).

Send an email to ang.angela.bell@gmail.com if you want to attend. The
companies are aimed at recruiting juniors and seniors.
