Which gpa?

Hey guys I was wondering which high school gpa colleges look at. Is it the one that your high school provides on the transcrpit or do they re-calc it themselves??Also, I know colleges look for unweighted gpa but my school says your unweighted gpa is is your gpa plus a 0.025 for ap classes, yet they still say its unweighted inorder to calc hs rank. what should i think

Generally, if your high school has a weighted/un-weighted distinction or differs from the GPA standard that colleges use (which I think is usually A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, etc.), they’ll just go ahead and re-calculate it.

There is no such thing as “what they do” with GPA. Not for colleges, and not for high schools, either.

Many colleges do recalculate GPA, but the ones that recalculate don’t all use the same method. Additionally, there are many colleges, including many selective ones, that don’t recalculate; they just use the GPA that the high school reports, and use the school profile to help them understand what that GPA means.

My guess, which is only a guess, is that the colleges that don’t recalculate tend to overlap a lot with the colleges that review applications holistically. Read Post #13 in this thread (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1193457-esse-quam-videri-how-do-college-applications.html</a>) and see what Chris has to say about SAT scores at MIT. I strongly suspect that at many colleges that are more holistic and less numbers-driven, the approach to GPA is very much the same.

As for high schools, my kids’ high school reports both weighted and unweighted GPA on the official transcript, but I’m sure many other high schools work differently. And all you have to do is poke around CC to learn that high schools differ wildly in what they weight, and how much.
