I am from India(male), and I am confused as in which housing I should select.

I only have 2 requirements:

I do not want to have a party environment.
I would like to stay with other international(indian) undergrads.

any suggestions?

btw, I will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
also, if I pay for priority filling, but then decide not to go to UIUC, I will only lose the deposit right?

Hey,
Housing application is $50. In addition you have to pay $150 as deposit. If you choose not to attend UIUC, then you’ll lose the money.

I am an Indian majoring in Comp.E as well…I chose PAR as my first preference followed by ISR…From what I have gathered, ISR mostly consists of engineers but it is difficult for freshmen to get a place as a lot of returning students live there.

From what ive heard you definitely shouldn’t select PAR as its far away from almost everything. Any ISR is full of engineers but tough to get in for freshmen.
I opted for private certified housing (Hendrick House). Its close to the engineering quad (majoring in CS) and costs as much as the uni dorms. Only drawback is its not supposed to be very social, but I don’t think it’ll matter that much considering how huge UIUC is.

And try not to get too fixated with having an Indian roomie, if you think like that from the start, your never going to make friends.

(Also looking for a roommate,Hendrick house east)

@pulkit: I would be considered as Delhi-Faridabad-Sonepat mix. but ill be going to univ from Shanghai.

@karan: i am not too keen on going for private housing, as i have never experienced a ‘dorm feel’… if you know what i mean…so ill be sticking with regular dorms, and as for the indian roomie, i guess you are right for the most part, but having a roomie with whom you have something in common, does make a lot of things easier :)

Six Pack is pretty much considered to have more of a party environment because its right next to all of the greek housing. Definitely the loudest and most crowded of the dorms.

FAR/PAR is very far from everything. If you live at FAR/PAR, then you will probably learn to love the bus system or stay in your dorm quite a bit. Especially if you are trying to get to a building on the other side of campus like the Siebel Center (CS). It does have the best food on campus in my opinion though. It also is better for international students due to the living learning community.

ISR is usually recommended for engineers simply because its the closest to the engineering quad. Its generally thought of as the stereotypical engineering dorm. There are of course exceptions to that (I have a really cool Psych major friend who lived there). Its probably the quietest of the dorms. Being Engineering, I’d bet it has the second most international students living there.

Allen I speak of the most because its the one I went to. Allen is - stereotypically speaking - the artsy liberal LGBT dorm. Of all the dorms (though remember I lived there), it seemed to me Allen was the closest of all of them. The RAs tend to put more effort into social events. I think this is due to the living learning environment that attempts to give a small college feeling at a large university. I lived there as a CS major and it was a 10-15 minute walk to the Siebel Center every day.

Busey: Can’t really say much about it, because honestly it was the an all girls dorm and I only ever ate there. Didn’t meet anyone that lived there. Busey has the best desserts for sure, I can say that much.
