I haven't started school yet so I just want to know which one to look for. So based on equipment, crowdedness, atmosphere, and ...girls haha.

I think it might be the only one.

I go to the RSF and at $10/semester I think you easily get your money’s worth-plus access to SCRA, Golden Bear Pool, Hearst Pool, etc in late spring-early fall

RSF is okay, nice equipment but they have some stupid rules. you can’t bring bags in, which sucks cuz i usually carry a lot of stuff in to work out.

you can also try 24 hour fitness in downtown berkeley.

there’s lockers you can use though. and i wouldn’t want to deal with your junk all over mah space. :D

RSF is my favorite. Very nice facilities, very cheap for students, and very close.

There are not only lockers you can use, but ALSO free locks they let you use.

The only setback is that the locks can sometimes be VERY hard to open (one time, a worker had to use giant pliers to get a bad lock off of my locker). But overall, the RSF is the place to work out.

@MechRocket:

Not being allowed to take a bag in hasn’t stopped me from training with chains. It’s only an issue if you let it be an issue.

I can only speak for the weightroom, but the RSF is by far the best place nearby. Wouldn’t mind them adding a Reverse Hyper or a Chest-Supported Row (and heavier dumbbells), but they’re ahead of most college weightrooms by a pretty long shot.

You want heavier dumbbells? I’ve only seen like three or four people ever use up to 120 and that’s only for db presses. O_O

How do you guys find the time to go to the RSF? I go a few times early on in the semester and stop once the schoolwork kicks in.

@RaNe,

You dirty resolutioner.

Exercise isn’t an every-once-and-a-while affair, it’s a constant habit done 3-4 times a week, spread out with 3-5 mile runs in between visit.

It takes 2 hours maximum. I wake up at 7am, eat, watch some ****ty thing I find on the internet (digesting time), run to the RSF, lift, run back, eat again, get started with my day. Usually by the time I’m done it’s around 10am. I go to bed at 12am, so that leaves 14 hours of time (during the days I’m not working in SF, of course).

@Batman - I don’t right now, but I can see myself using them for grip work, lunges, and isometric ab work in the future. I’ve got a pair of Olympic Handles for anything higher than that, but I can see it getting annoying to take them in (…not that that’s stopped me with anything else, but w/e).

@RaNe - A strong dislike of partying (or a willingness to give them up) and decent time management go a long way. Naps can also be useful (fairly easy since I don’t train on consecutive days other than weekends). Efficiency during training is useful as well, though that’s something I’ve sucked at for the last semester.

@Ektaylor - Most people I know don’t go to sleep at midnight every day. Usually 2-3 AM. It’s really hard to change the time you sleep by two/three hours. But props for your habit. I’ll try and change mine. I plan on mainly just running on the machines.

@jonnosferatu - Yah, I’m going to try and set out a schedule I can stick with. I didn’t go to the RSF at all last semester.

This thread answers many of the things I’ve been wondering…

I hope to get in the RSF a lot this semester. Dropping some serious LB’s was one of my goals for this year.

Hippo I know exactly how you feel. I need to get back into shape and lose some fat. I cannot believe how lazy I am in college compared to high school.

Does anyone know when the weights rooms at the RSF is the least crowded? I’ve been there a couple of times in the evenings on weekdays and the place has always been packed with people. Would be nice to not have to wait to use some of the machines.

Mornings, Friday/Saturday night after 7-9pm.

Yeah I agree. It’s either you go in the morning/afternoon when half the kids are in school or late into the night about 9-closing. Even at 9, it can get pretty crowded. But if you’re going in that late, I really wouldn’t recommend it. Heard it’s not good for your sleep or something.
