Which one of these universities has the best Communications program?

I'm looking at majoring in Communications and go into media (like magazines...not the writing part though), tv, or something with traveling.

Which one of these universities has the best COMMUNICATIONS department?

NYU
Boston University
Tulane
Loyola University Chicago
Indiana University
CUNY Hunter
The New School

NYU…communications is a joke major by the way. Just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt.

NYU followed by BU.

^I would concur.

I’m not sure but I would guess you could follow the media markets for this one. NYU then BU. I think Indiana has a good Comm dept. I know Tulane has a good one and New Orleans is definitely the most unique city for TV and Print Comm/Journalism majors in terms of things to write about/cover. It also has the most unique list of festivals, politics, and social issues (poverty, katrina, ect.) to cover. Communications is sort of a weak major, but I was a Finance guy, so I’m a little biased.

My sister is a freshman at NYU. My father simply said he would not pay a dime if her intent was to go into communication. Communications is the weakest major you can take at the college level.

Really, Communications? Over Ceramics, Art History, Religion ? etc, ?

/English Major
// I support my awesome Ceramics, Art History and Religion major compatriots

Those are comparable but communications is still easier.

If you are still in the exploratory process, I would recommend looking at schools like Syracuse, Mizzou, Northwestern, and UNC, which all have incredibly strong journalism and communications programs.

BrownBear, Communications at BU encompasses the following: Film/TV production, radio production, journalism, public relations, and I’m sure others I’m forgetting. I can’t imagine that any of these would be “easy” or not worth the money to study. The Comm school at BU is one of the top ten Comm schools in the country, but beyond that Communications - just the concept of “communicating” - is ALL we do anymore! It’s all about information in the world we live in. From what I understand, BU, NYU, Syracuse, USC (Annenberg), Northwestern all have terrific Communications schools.

LOL Elizabeth your kidding right. Those classes look SOOOO easy. Parents are paying what 50k all in at BU for “Film Production” and “Radio Production”?? sounds like a four year vacation to me.

I just visited Missouri this weekend and I was blown away by the Journalism school. It’s a top notch communications school…maybe the best in the country. Syracuse is also great. UNC-Chapel Hill is awesome too.

Wow BrownBear, you miss the point. It’s not a “vacation” at all. Maybe you only equate learning with cracking a book and reading it, but there are many of ways to learn…and by the way, the Comm students do enormous amounts of writing during their time at BU, which is essential to communications in any format. And the true success of the BU Comm program can be seen in the fantastic internships and jobs they get after graduation. Open your mind a little bit!

lolololol communications

Channel 5 (Fox) New York had Brittney (made up name) a senior NYU Communications Major and Channel 5 intern do the sports highlights. Brittney specifically ASKED to do that segment, they said. The lead-in was that she is a graduating senior and Channel 5 intern so … station managers might want to give her a look.

So Brittney, looking amazingly poised and self-assured and appearing to be a California blonde straight out of The Real Orange County begins her highlights with the New Jersey Devils Hockey playoff game.

Brittney mispronounced Raleigh, N.C. as Rally. Brittney mispronounced legendary goalie Martin Broduer last name as BROADer … all within the first 20 seconds. I immediately invoked the ‘mercy rule’ and switched channels.

What could she have possibly done in preparation for her big moment other than twitter with her friends Candi and Bambi?

If I saw this in the film Anchorman I would thought it to be a cheap shot. Seeing it live was surreal. I don’t have an opinion about communications as a school/major, but after this, I really don’t want to hear about the merits of NYU Communications. The whole department should be wearing black arm bands today.

Some of these replies make my blood boil.

At UCLA, my alma mater, Communication Studies is the most impacted major in the College of Letters and Science. Students can’t apply for the major until spring of their sophomore year, and if you don’t have a GPA of 3.8 or above, don’t bother applying. As a Comm Studies major way back when, I took courses in psychology, linguistics, law, sociology, and anthropology as well as communications. Only one of my requirements was a film class - ironic, since I ended up working in the film industry.

To the OP: I’m sorry, I don’t know a lot about the schools you listed. UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford, and Northwestern are schools my daughter (also a prospective Comm major) is looking at, and USC’s Annenberg School is also excellent. (the Bruin said with gritted teeth :)) On the east coast, I have heard good things about Syracuse, and you might want to take a look at Emerson. We have not looked at NYU, as my D doesn’t want to live in NYC.

And BrownBear1, “because my daddy said so” is not generally accepted as validation of a statement of fact except by third-graders on the playground.

Communications is a joke I think the general populist view is that any com major is easy and not worth the money.

A major’s worth is not defined by how difficult it is. Grow up.

So DougBetsy you are in agreement that its the easiest major in the whole wide world…and its a joke.

For those interested in exploring Northwestern, be aware that there is both a school of journalism (Medill) and a school of communications (in which communications majors are found, along with theater and radio / tv / film).

And Brownbear, who are you kidding? Like you could handle being a radio / tv / film major at a school like Northwestern! What’s easy about it? It takes a different set of skills than chemistry class, yes, but so what?
