I've been accepted to PSU's Smeal, and I'm falling in love every moment. So, I'm planning to decide which residence hall will suit me. I personally want a dorm where it's close to the Smeal building (as a freshmen, will all of my classes be in this building?) and library and fitness building. I've checked out the North, East, and South Hall where they seemed like they're good places but I am not sure which one of them will be the "perfect" dorm for the first-year Smeal student. Can someone share their experiences in these halls?

I personally do not have any experience with the residence halls. I will also be a freshman this fall. I have visited Penn State three times. I have also talked to many current students. They all recomend East Halls for freshman. A majority of freshman live in East. East does not appear to be close to much except the stadium. I have heard North is mostly upper classmen. I have also heard that North is quieter than East. Hope this helped.

I too was accepted to Smeal and am trying to decide which residence halls I want to live in. I originally applied for the Business SLO in North Halls but after talking to some advisers I decided to apply for East. Also, my tour guide said she did not have a class in the Smeal building until Junior year but this may be a rare exception.

And East Halls are very close to the Smeal Building (if I remember correctly, they are basically across the road from each other). Someone should check me on that though.

I am a 2nd semester finance major in Smeal, and I haven't had a single class in the business building yet. I am in South and love it. South or West would be closest to your classes. Stay away from east, you won't regret it. West is right next to the library. South is next to downtown which is good for eating out, groceries, and partying (frats or apartments.)

You guys wont' have many classes in Smeal your freshman year. Maybe 1 at most (seminar class). I personally think East is one of the worst places to live (many will tell you otherwise). That place is gonna be REALLY FAR from most of your other classes, and its not gonna be fun walking or riding the really crowded buses during winter.

South and Pollock halls have the best location in my opinion. They're quite close to the HUB, recreational building/gym and downtown college avenue. West isn't so bad either, since its also closer to one of the recreational buildings and Pattee/Paterno library. Don't go with East, seriously.

Should i send in deposit if im not 100% sure I'm going there yet. I'm trying to wait off on USC and see their aid before, but if I have to to at least guarantee a housing spot then I will do it, I don't want to have to stay somewhere other than east.

swoopes2 - Well, I have a 5 year old roommate who barely goes to class and stays in the dorm listening to the same music and watching tv/movies. He watches shows like "Transformers," "Beast Wars," and "Planet Earth" with an extremely loud volume. One time he asked me if I like the movie "Alladin" or "The Lion King" more and I answered "neither," and he has the nerve to say I live under a rock. There're more to it; I just made a long story really short.

I really want to live on campus (all for years if possibly), because I feel like I would get the most out of my college experience. I did request a single room for next year though; I hope that (lottery) works out.

Eastview is a giant waste of money....Nitt Apts is where its at ;).
AND for all freshman....despite the remarks of some of the members on this board, East is a great place for freshies to live, you meet a lot of people and the IM building is pretty close (which is nice if you like to play b-ball with competition). Pollock and south also are nice, I like Redifer commons the best. youll probably end up in east anyway...

Actually if you do special living dorms you're likely to get those. I'm applying to the IST dorm and I heard most who want that get it...it's West which is close to classes etc.

Thanks for many insightful replies! But do you think I, Smeal freshmen, should fit well in the East Hall since it's right next to the Smeal business building? I just don't want to walk and live far away from most of my freshmen classes.

I would suggest looking to see what classes you would take as a freshman. Then go to the Schedule of Courses (Schedule of Courses) and see where those courses are typically held. You can click the building name and it will show you the map of where it is located. You might find that many of your classes will be closer to South, Pollock, etc. than to East.

You can visit the housing site for first year students (Housing: First-Year Students) and check out the floorplans, etc. of the different dorms.

We sumitted S's housing request this week. We'd like to get Atherton or Simmons, but it didn't let you pick those specifically (unless we somehow missed that part). It only let us pick South in general.
