I know that I will need 1 in math and 1 in science (if i want to apply to an engineering school), and some schools just require any two subject tests.

Which do you suggest i take?

Math level 1
Math level 2
Biology E/M
Chemistry
Physics

I will be taking Physics in senior year (after i take this test sadly..) and I don't feel too confident in SAT chemistry or biology. Are there any prep books for these specific subject tests? How difficult are they?

Take Math II. Use Barron’s even though it’s harder than the actual test. I got 640, 640, 720, and 720 on the practice tests, but an 800 on the real thing. For the science, take whatever you feel most confident about, but make a decision early, so you have time to study it all.

Math 2, definitely. If you haven’t taken Physics yet, you might want to decide if you’re stronger at Biology or Chemistry. Pick one right away and start studying, if you’re not that confident about it yet. Biology is more memorization based, Chemistry is more understanding concepts.

So i should get Barron’s books for both math 1 and bio? I feel most comfortable with Bio and I can memorize things easily. I didnt take trig / calculus unfortunately, so im going to take math 1.

Problem is Barrons probably offers more pages of information on math 1. Princeton has more pages, but it is on BOTH math 1 and 2, and i only need math 1.

Buy the Barron’s book for Math I. I own both Barron’s and the Princeton book and Barron’s is more thorough. Princeton Review’s book is better suited for the SAT math.

You might also want to check out the sparknotes study guide for free tests and a review.

And if you decide to take the Chemistry Subject Test then Barron’s is the way to go. I used that a month and a half before the test (I’d never taken Chemistry before) and got an 800.

You should study the entire book even if you’re only taking Bio E. After you finish the book then you can start focusing on the Ecology parts.

60 questions on the test will cover all of Bio so molecular is fair game.

Oh, and I wish that I hadn’t decided which Bio exam to take before taking the exam because when I finished (I took Bio E), I went back and looked at the Bio M questions and saw that if I had answered them I would have probably scored an 800 instead of 760. So keep an open mind regardless of which subject you like more.

As to which ones to take, it can depend on where you are applying. Safest is math 2 because it covers all colleges that require a math for engineering; math 1 is not accepted at UCs or Caltech. For science, and for the same reason, chemistry or physics because some won’t accept biology, e.g., Carnegie Mellon’s engineering school requires chemistry or physics.

if i have only taken algebra 1 , geometry, and algebra 2 so far, am in good enough shape to get a decent score on math 2 if i study math 2 books? I do want to apply to some schools that allow only math 2, so im kinda forced into that one…
