Which schools begin the earliest?

I'd like to visit some schools in late august, so which schools (out of the more selective ones) begin in mid-late august? thanks

i think usc is late august

UIUC starts the 23rd of August.

A lot of schools begin in late August.

Those in the quarter system don't start until September though.

My school (Rice) started orientation around Aug 14 last year and classes started on the 21st. But this year it's moving forward about a week. But you shouldn't have a problem finding schools starting in late August.

What kind of schools are you looking for? What geographic regions are you willing to go to in order to visit?

UCLA = Late Sept
UCB = End of August

Upenn, Duke, NU, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, Brown, Uchicago?

Don't go to Stanford then because it starts in late September :)

God bless the Quarter/Trimester System, and the awkward vacations they give us!

UVa starts Aug. 23rd as well, but students move in beforehand.

UGA - August 16th - first day of classes - always early

Chicago, Stanford, Northwestern, and Dartmouth all start late because they're on what's called the quarter system. Basically, the calendar looks something like this:

late September: fall quarter begins (2.5 months)
early December: finals, then winter break
early January: winter quarter begins (another 2.5 months)
mid March: finals, then spring break
late March: spring quarter begins (you get the idea)
mid June: finals, followed by the mysterious "summer quarter"

The University of Chicago was the first school to do this back in the 1930s and after a few years a few other schools followed suit. It's not as bad as it sounds because the courses are designed to be 10 weeks, not 15 weeks long, and you get to take a greater variety of classes before you graduate.
