I am unsure of which subject tests to take, and whether the classes I am in will be sufficient.

As a Freshman I took the SAT II Biology - M and got a 740.

As a Sophomore I am in Honors Chemistry, English 10, AP European History, Algebra II, and Spanish II. I plan to take the SAT II Chemistry this June.

As a Junior I plan to take IB Physics SL, IB English HL, IB History HL, IB Mathematics SL (pre-calc), and IB Spanish SL.

I am usually stronger in Science than say History, but am not sure how I would do on the SAT II math. On the PSAT, I got a 620 on the Math section.

Which SAT II tests would correspond with the classes I'm taking?

Grades for 1st Semester Sophomore Year:
Honors Chemistry A
English 10 A
AP European History A
Algebra II A
Spanish III A+

The number and distribution of SAT IIs you should take depends on what schools you plan to apply to, although as a sophomore you may not have a complete list yet.

To be safe, take at least three. You will have two sciences already, but it would still be smart to take a math as well. After pre-calculus, Math Level 2 is not terrible, so taking that at the end of your junior year is probably a good idea. If you plan to apply to any Institutes of Technology, they will probably require both a math and a science.

If you are not a native spanish speaker, the SAT II in spanish is often very difficult because they include the scores of both native speakers and non-native speakers in the curve, so it is often much harder because the native speakers skew the average.

The literature SAT II is also always a good option if you don’t want to take math, because there is not a specific class you have to take in order to do well on it, and it will show a range of academic capabilities combined with the two sciences.

Thank you collegerus! Literature seems like a good idea.

I should also add that the History I’m taking in 11th grade is American History/ IB History of the Americas. I’m really not sure what humanities SAT II’s I should take.

Regarding the SAT Bio: Although 740 is a fine score, it does seem a bit low if I’m aiming towards top tier schools. Should I not count it as a “good” score that I have, and take 4 SAT IIs anyway? I could have Chemistry, Math II, and like Literature or US History.

^ Very true. I got a 760 on the French reading test after Junior year and that was 83rd percentile. There are a lot of native speakers who take them.
