I have been struggling with looking at colleges and how my relationship affects that. We have been together for about 6-7 months and love each other, and we plan on both going to college near each other and locally. He is a senior and he chose a local community college, and I am a junior. For personal and financial reasons, I may also go to a community college, however, I do not know how much my relationship is affecting my college choices, or if this is good or bad. I always knew that I wanted to stay close, but I don’t know if my relationship is making my scope even smaller. I have about six months before I need to start thinking about it, and about a year before I need to make a decision. I do want him in my life, yet I do not know how it will be next year when he is in college and I am still at high school, living in what will probably feel like a long distance relationship because we won’t be seeing each other as often. But what could all of that mean a few years down the road? What would you do?
I would apply to a variety of schools because your perspective will be different a year from now when you have to decide. Maybe you’re still together, maybe you’re not, maybe you’re engaged. If you limited your choices prematurely, you might be very unhappy come April 2017.
A degree from a college is forever.
