Which undergraduate school should I choose?

I really want to go to Wharton, but from what I've heard and seen on College Confidential, it's super competitive. Will I have a better shot at Penn if I apply to a less competitive undergraduate school? Can I transfer undergraduate schools if I get in?

Wharton is considerably more competitive to get into than CAS or SEAS. With that being said, CAS and SEAS aren’t easy. Just easier. Which translates into really really really hard, but not the hardest.

In terms of transferring once you get in, its generally agreed upon that going from Wharton to CAS is fairly easy, but going from CAS to Wharton is extremely hard.

If your heart is set for Wharton, I would take a chance and apply. Do not apply to CAS because its assumed to be easier than Wharton. Just remember one of the great things about Penn is the One University Policy. You do not have to go to Wharton to study at Wharton lol

Apply to the school that fits you

Me: CAS fits my academic interest Wharton and I would never work out

For the record in order to successfully transfer from a school to Wharton you would need about a 3.8 freshman GPA for serious consideration, and the curves applied to the requisites (Math 104, Econ 001&002) are anything but kind so it’s extremely difficult to achieve that said GPA.

If you really want to go to Wharton, follow that desire and apply to that school.

Eh, it is easier to transfer into Wharton if you have a good grasp of mathematics and don’t mind gaming the system a bit with bs courses and the like. That said, it’d limit some of your options if you plan on getting a second degree, graduating early and the like. While most of my friends who wanted to transfer in did get in, I definitely still prefer starting out at wharton and not having to worry about the process. I’d only consider transferring in if you wouldn’t mind doing econ at the college as a backup.

I really hate when I see posts like this. That’s not a mentality I would want dogging me all through freshman year. I do know people who transferred in, but you have to do very well in all your classes, and as of last year there’s also an essay–presumably to weed out people who can’t think of a good reason they didn’t apply to Wharton in the first place.

It’s also not just a random chance that you’ll get in to one of the schools. CAS, SEAS, Nursing, and Wharton students all have distinct profiles and fits. Even if your chance of being accepted to Nursing is 5x that of Wharton…it’s probably not a good idea to game the system and apply to Nursing. Same for SEAS, maybe less so for CAS but still a consideration.
