I recommend 2 white boards:

1 for inside your room (so you can write notes to yourself/your roommate)
1 for outside your room (so your friends can leave you notes and such)

White board white board white board

BOTH! But a mirror can substitute for a whiteboard in a pinch. I liked having a cork board in my room to post stuff on.

I have a whiteboard for my door. My first year I had a big board that was half white, half cork. I found that I really needed each side to be bigger, so this year I have a big white board AND a big corkboard. They really help me stay organized.

Make one with melamine.

i feel like whiteboards are more of a girl thing…not to generalize or anything

are they really necessary for a guy…i feel like thye would look weird

Every dorm room here has a white board and cork board on the outside of the door. Maybe you should wait before making a purchase.

Yeah, whiteboards are definitely more of a girl thing. My girlfriend and a lot of the girls on her floor had one, whereas the only guy that had one on my floor had to have one because he was the RA.

In my dorm, every GUY had a white board while only two or three girls did.

I’m a big white board fan. Didn’t have one on my door, but I did use it for writing my schedule and leaving notes to myself. My only problem with corkboards is that I’d rather organize papers when they’re flat on a desk.

In my dorm, almost everyone had white boards on their door, men and women alike. I hadn’t bothered to get one and eventually did because I felt left out. lol

lol, white boards. I wanted one to put outside of my door, but I didn’t want someone to do a Picasso rendition of their genitals >.< hehehe

I already have one on my living room wall for keeping up with my assignments/to-do lists. I’d reccommend them, absolutely

I love my white board! I’d definitely get one(or two) and you can also get one that’s half white board and half corkboard. I use a corkboard to hang my jewelry though and it’s pretty handy, other than that I’d only use magnets on my white board to hang notes, etc.

Get at least one white board for your door. It can help communication with the people on your hall.

You should get both, although if I had to choose, I’d say the get the whiteboard. I never put one outside my door, but I’m planning to do so next year. I also got a really huge one that I’d do scrap work on. For instance if I was trying to figure out a math or physics problem I’d do it on my whiteboard first instead of wasting paper trying to figure it out.

Actually, now that I think about it, the whiteboard is way better than the corkboard. The corkboard I had was part of a half whiteboard/half corkboard… board. I only ever used the corkboard because it was there, whereas I’d put reminders on the whiteboard side. After reading the above comments I think I might use it to hang my jewellery though.

I agree with two whiteboards. The one outside will be helpful for communicating w/ your roommate or people down the hall. Yes, you’re inviting some genitalia-inspired pictures, but just have an eraser also :)

I’m getting a really big white board and using painting tape to make a big write-on calendar. I’m putting it right over my bed so I can’t forget anything! :D

I wanted a white board but now I also want a corkboard and maybe another white board for my door. We shall see. :D

My dorm didn’t have enough white board space, so you’d find abstract algebra equations, or econ-grade-calculations, on the kitchen windows. As a guy, I have to say a large, portable whiteboard (maybe with a stand or something to hang it on), so you can do problem sets with a group of people rather than alone on paper. Makes a huge difference in how well you can understand the material, and how quickly you can work through it (no one’s afraid of getting rid of bad work on a whiteboard).

If you are taking a science or math class, sometimes a larger whiteboard comes in handy at study time.
