george: yeah, my high school required kids to take AP Calc to graduate, so I took Calc BC junior year, got a 5, so I passed out of Calc 1 & 2 in college, so I took Calc 3 in the fall and DiffEq this semester…it’s not too bad and math has always been a strong subject of mine…

la la la…I just went to the W-H Internship website and they still haven’t updated the date on there, which is kind of funny, because we got the emails around like, what? 3-5ish? that was a while ago. Oh well, I assume that everyone that needed the info got it so there’s no point in posting it on the website… hah.

Anyways…George I totally forget, are you a sophomore-to-be-junior or what?

pretty impressive! my high school was too redneck to have AP classes, lol, you are really lucky and privileged!

I am a Junior, but will be graduating in Spring 2011. our engineering track is a 10 semester thing since they dilute it with tons of liberal arts classes, not that that is a bad thing, but still… So, when I graduate, Ill be a 2nd year senior, lol

(oh, and i say its a 10 semester thing, because even tho the school says 4 year program, the average engineering student at my school graduates in 10.2 semesters lol)

that’s awesome us engineers need to stick together through this!! I was super worried when I applied because I did loads of research (read: google search) on past interns so I read up on a TON of articles from various schools on kids who interned and all the majors were like polysci, or journalism, or history, or something. and I was like “engineering…?”

but yay! And yeah…my school is pretty hardcore, if you research the forum you can figure out which school I went to, but for the sake of big brother I wont mention it again 'til after this application process ends :P

aaaanyways, who else went crazy like me and went through 30-some pages of google search on “White House Internship”/“White House Intern” to learn as much as possible??

about all the researching, you can count me in Big Time!..it might be just us engineers because we are so calculating and detail/info needy lol.

on a side note, I went to church with Jimmy Carter a month and half ago, and if it were not for being so star-struck, I would have asked him to put in a word for me, lol, however, i had a bit of a blessing in disguise. as i took my pic with him, secret service didnt know how to use my camera, so as they fumbled with it, i had a chance to chitchat with him for a couple of minutes…ironically, the camera worked the whole time, they were snapping up pics as I spoke, they just didnt know it, hahaha lol

oh, and jimmy carter and the secret service parked next to my car! :)

(his wife, rosalynn was super sweet to me too! )

hahaha I love how star struck we get around political people :)

Anyways it’s past midnight on the east coast so I’m off for today! Another final for me tomorrow See you guys later! (yeah-- so much for forum-esque discussion)

hey!
I definitly have been combing through articles on Google to find anything I can about former White House interns/any White House news regarding the internship. Its totally added to my anxiety about this, but oh well!(oh,and I’m also an international relations/sociology major…so I guess I don’t really fit in…lol)
Take care everyone…I look forward to continuing this awesome journey w/ you guys.
Awesome, as in we’re optimistic…not our anxiety.
G’Bye

I thought that I too should come out of the woodworks, and join in on the conversation. As of last Wednesday, all of my references had been checked, and like previous posters, one of my references is a very influential member of Congress from California. Today, I received an email from FN-WH-Intern-Finalist stating that they have reviewed my completed application, talked with my references, and upon my clearing of the FBI background check, I have been offered an internship in The Office of Political Affairs. I just wanted to know if anybody else had received the same email, I am so excited and want to converse with the other finalists soon!

ucla 2009- did you have a phone interview at all? if you didnt it would appear each office has their own way of selecting interns. and therefore, people dont give up hope!

Wow…this discussion board has gone crazy since i last wrote. I want to say thank you to all the people who knew about withheld information and posted it here! Also, congrats to the people who got in (whether your writing on here or just reading posts). To all the rest of you, good luck. Like some of the other people on here, i don’t want to be negative but i also don’t want to be unrealistic…so I too will think of it as a “nice surprise” if i get in.

I will say this though. I check this board more than i check anything else right now…so i think it is safe to say i’m a little attached to you guys!

I certainly hope that in the end, like a few of ya’ll suggested earlier–for those who do get the internship, that they refer to one another by their names on this forum, haha.

And AwesomePossum: Is there any chance you go to George Mason University? I think the Obamas were there in October…would be a nice coincidence if you did go there haha.

AJFXW: nope not GMU, I live really close (read: 5 minutes) to there though.
hmmm I dont think I put Political Affairs as one of my top 5, so that makes me feel better and worse? I hope they do email acceptances to everyone. It’s nice to know the first person has made it. So maybe my trickle theory was right. Or maybe (I’m going to guess Pelosi too) they are super special (in a good way!)

I guess this is the first taste of the real political world. As much as you’d hope these type of positions would not just go the well-connected and those with thick wallets, the truth is–they always do. I still can’t help but feeling they’re going to give these internships to a diversity of people–those that are connected, and those that might not be but have a strong work ethic and great personality. And yes–I pray to God they release decisions through email. I would rather be rejected now (or Friday) than wait for another week for the mail. Of course, above all of these, I’d rather be accepted :-).

AJFXW: definitely! But either way, I doubt UCLA could have gotten in with a rec from their congress person if they didn’t know them at least a little and hadn’t done great stuff anyway (I mean, you don’t just get a rec from a random person who can’t talk about all the good you’ve done, right?) (random: I just realized you said you’re from VA, do you go to GMU/live in the NoVa area???)

oh man, speaking of which: CONGRATS UCLA!!! You’re the first on this thread to make it through, hopefully many more to come :)

I support the President and all, but cronyism does exist a certain bit. I have numerous objections to the President’s cabinet choices, etc…and it seems the people that were chosen were not so much qualified as being a part of the 90’s Left-cabal and what not…and this isnt the griping of a rejecte dperson, cause I still dont know yet, but still…

hahah, and must I add, I went to sleep with a healthy dose of rejection sting, lol. get it out of the way now, lol.

and if good news does come, it will be a pleasant Godly-miraculous surprise! :)
