White House Internship

@ vs2010, I was interviewed by OPA and the Office of the First Lady. Were you interviewed?

Hey guys,

I also got the message delaying the decision

For those of you who get accepted, would it be possible to briefly summarize your prior political experience, or what your personal attributes were that interested the WH in you?

It would greatly help future applicants is assessing their chance of being offered an internship based on the information you provide, as those who were accepted to the program…

Thanks!

This is nerve racking I got the same email about “thanks for the patience” I understand that they are really busy but I really want to know now… Hopefully we will find out by the end of this week.

I have been part of this thread since last summer and I think that everyone is definitely qualified but there just aren’t enough slots. It’s not a “who do I know” or “what kind of connections do I have” game because I had none whatsoever and I was selected as an intern in Summer of 2009. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience so everyone don’t stop trying. :)

I’ve been looking over this thread recently and I too am one of those people who received the “please be patient” email. Has anyone been contacted since that email? I called the office on Monday and they said that they would finish contacting people on Tuesday…oh well.

when is the best academic year to apply?

Should i apply during my sophomore year for fall of junior year? should i apply for senior year?

obviously i want to look good for grad school and of course a rec from this would be great

Hey guys, I’m interested in applying once I build a proper resume/entered college…but my good friend recently got accepted and I wanted to show her stats:

4.0 GPA, small private university, Model UN @ Harvard, Study Abroad at Brussels/Europe, Research experience, Debate awards, etc etc. She also taught MCAT, SAT, ACT at the Princeton Review and had all these other crazy EC’s. She’s going to attend medical school at Georgetown this fall, so I guess that was a strong factor as well as to why she got accepted. Basically she had two strong interests, and it showed in her resume: Medicine and Political Science. Hopefully that offered any insight on the accepted applicant pool!

Not at all surprising this is the type of candidate who gets accepted; my friend is one of Obama’s advisors and he told me earlier today that the admission rate for the WH internship program is lower than Yale Law’s…

Just curious:
To those of you who were rejected, did you all receive the email about the “other” opportunities?

Ps. Whatever happened with the two folks who had their decision notification dates extended?

Darkhorse: I got the e-mail that you recieved about the alternative e-mails. Do you plan on acting on any?

GodisGood, thanks for the confirmation. As for whether I’ll follow up…I don’t know. Some of the opportunities look interesting. Yet, for me, everything is a matter of logistics.

Should you apply, I wish you the best of “luck.”

I received the alternative opportunities e-mail as well. I guess it won’t hurt to send in a resume and cover letter to a few of those places…if anyone else is also doing so, keep us up to date if you end up with an opportunity!

darkhorse2010 –
I still haven’t heard anything. First, I was told I would be notified by the end of the day, Monday April 12. Then I received an email saying that they hoped to notify me by the end of that week (April 16). I called around 5pm on April 16, and the person I spoke to suddenly got defensive saying “I have no idea who gave you those dates - we don’t have deadlines!” but also promised that she was still working on it, and that I would hear something as soon as decisions had been made.
I very politely let her know that I appreciated her work but that I was delaying other decisions for this and that I might not be able to wait much longer without being forced into a decision.
Its now April 24, and still no word from the WH. I won’t be calling the office any more to check - I’ve moved on and accepted something else that had a deadline instead of risking having nothing at all this summer. Just for fun, I wonder when/if I’ll ever get an answer…

We’re in the same boat. No reply yet.

I wonder why they sent this email out…

Hmmph. I’m sorry; that sounds terrible. It almost seems as though you’ve been wait-listed, but without confirmation. Probably smart of you to move along, but hopefully you’ll hear back soon either way.

Thanks and please keep us updated.

When is the best time to apply for this? Would it be bad to do it in the fall of senior year when I’ll be applying to grad school?

This job is definitely about who you know…or who your parents know… Are you kidding? Maybe a handful are given a spot, so yes, way lower than Yale Law.

pennyp…I would strongly disagree with that statement. I seriously doubt my own parents voted for Obama and am quite sure they didn’t give any money to the campaign. I wasn’t old enough to vote, yet Fall of 2009 I was right there with the rest of the interns. I 'm sure there are people who got it because of connections, but the bulk of the people who interned with me were simply hard workers and well qualified.

That being said, if people have any questions, feel free to contact me. I would be happy to help in an way that I can.
