Anyone have to write one of these? The question is just "Who are you? - provide a creative definition of yourself". It seems so easy, yet it's the only essay that I haven't been able to come up with anything for out of all my applications. If anyone has any suggestions as to what to write about (in general, not about me specifically of course) I'd really, really appreciate it.

I am a terrorist.

This seems like an open essay. Just write about something important in your life. Whatever it is you write about, will show them something about you.

I'd start every sentence with "I am..." then talking about an interesting fact about yourself, then end the essay with "I am...(name)"

Very interesting A2Wolves6 .... Will that work for BING/SBU's essay if I choose to write on a topic of my choice for the common app?

Sure, don't know why it wouldn't. It fits what they want to see in an essay, and you will make yourself stand out.

Interesting that you would say that, because that's exactly what I was planning on doing. Considering you and I came up with the same idea, I wonder how many people turn in essays like that.

How about
I know no fear...
I know no danger...
I know.... NOTHING

(Johnny english :D brilliant movie)

I am breathing heavily through mask ... your father.

THEME FOR ENGLISH B
By Langston Hughes
The instructor said,

Go home and write
a page tonight.
And let that page come out of you---
Then, it will be true.

I wonder if it's that simple?
I am twenty-two, colored, born in Winston-Salem.
I went to school there, then Durham, then here
to this college on the hill above Harlem.
I am the only colored student in my class.
The steps from the hill lead down into Harlem
through a park, then I cross St. Nicholas,
Eighth Avenue, Seventh, and I come to the Y,
the Harlem Branch Y, where I take the elevator
up to my room, sit down, and write this page:

It's not easy to know what is true for you or me
at twenty-two, my age. But I guess I'm what
I feel and see and hear, Harlem, I hear you:
hear you, hear me---we two---you, me, talk on this page.
(I hear New York too.) Me---who?
Well, I like to eat, sleep, drink, and be in love.
I like to work, read, learn, and understand life.
I like a pipe for a Christmas present,
or records---Bessie, bop, or Bach.
I guess being colored doesn't make me NOT like
the same things other folks like who are other races.
So will my page be colored that I write?
Being me, it will not be white.
But it will be
a part of you, instructor.
You are white---
yet a part of me, as I am a part of you.
That's American.
Sometimes perhaps you don't want to be a part of me.
Nor do I often want to be a part of you.
But we are, that's true!
As I learn from you,
I guess you learn from me---
although you're older---and white---
and somewhat more free.

This is my page for English B.

Hmm.... maybe....

I had to do an essay like that, only it was me in 50 words or less. Here's what I wrote:

I am a soft spoken extrovert who sings loudly and laughs louder; a witty teenager with an affinity for Greek philosophy and eighties music, Roman history and Audrey Hepburn movies; and a believer in the power of knowledge over ignorance, laughter over tragedy and hard work over circumstance.

Eighties music and Audrey Hepburn? Pff... what century are you from?

Not to mention Greek philosophy and Roman history. Pfff...

Oh wait, I like those too. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

haha just recycle your other essays. they'll work.

hideandseek is right...thats what you should do

and wolves......Your idea of the start and the end of the essay HAS ALREADY BEEN USED A MILLION TIMES....coz it appeared on Princetonreview's sample admission essays. So everyone knows about this strategy.....which means its common...which means its now cliched.....which means......its of no use!!!

the question is as open as it can get.......just write about anything you want the adcoms to know......and connect it with you.......you cant miss it!!

Oh wow... I said that "I have cultivated interests in existentialist philosophy, foreign films, heavy metal music, Audrey Heburn movies, and laughing. I became quite good at laughing."

(The topic was not "about me." I wrote about how I had dedicated my life to one sport and realized it was the wrong goal all along, and when I quit my life kind of fell apart around me.)
