Footnote: "Honestly, I think a factor in applying to Penn was that I was from Philadelphia, plus the fact that I was able to get recommendations from Penn alumni that had actually seen how I performed, and not just on paper. But I think the biggest factor in my admissions process was my strong grades. Strong SAT scores (2000+) may be good, but one can coach for them in 6 months to a year. But it’s not as easy to stay focused on your grades for four straight years.
Don’t try to write what you think the admissions officers will like to hear; write your essays from your heart, and not based on what someone else tries to tell you.
About interviews, I think that they should only be used to try to explain unique situations, but overall, use them to give yourself a positive image for the school. However, I didn’t need one because I had attended a Penn summer program - sort of a month long “interview”, so to speak.

Footnote: “I had strong recommendations and positive interviews with alumni. I believe that my essays set me apart. I was extremely on top of the application process.”

I think both got in. I hate to bring race into this but I think that is what got them in.

yup, I also think both got in!
Again, this comes to show SAT's aren't EVERYTHING!!!!

You guys are wrong. One got in and the other got rejected.

if one got in i would have to think it was the second one

Wrong again!:D The first one got in and the second one didn't.

Why would you think the second got in? I definitely think it would have been the first one.

Yeah, I'd have said the first one got in and not the second

oh the madnessss

ha, this kind of gives me hope...

too bad im ASIAN =(

Not even URM can make up for a 3.28 UW GPA...

is the first kid considered URM? asian/black, thats an odd combo, and gets the best of both worlds if he IS in fact considered to be URM. although, he is not as URM as say, a pure black person, and his scores are meh, far below the average, but GPA is good. im gonna go ahead and say this gives me a glimmer of life, because of the comment he made about essays, and really conveying YOURSELF to penn. shows that bad scores and grades can be made up for with great character (not necessarily in the form of EC's either). i think what this says is: for a school like penn, you need to show a dire interest in it, and also in yourself. having a single passion would probably help immensley in penn admissions.

well, thats what i got out of it :) im interested in what the rest of you interpret this as!

i agree - although i have no idea what standing Blasians have with URM stuff.

would it be good if you've got decent stats, a burning desire to be at penn && a single passion? ... :) i need at least a deferral - i couldn't handle a rejection :( lol

honestly i think the "decent stats" gives penn the rep it has. people with decent stats do get in, but BECAUSE they show a true interest in the school. they also generally convey a true passion as well...so yea paro, honestly, i think if you can do that effectively (or if you did do that in the ED app), then you have a solid chance at being ACCEPTED :) dont get your hopes up though, this is comin from another kid who has decent stats ^.~

This post really gives me so hope, I have decent stats.

You're welcome:).

i guess it now depends on your definition of "decent stats", eh?
or at least the adcoms' definition.
check out my stats profile and tell me what you think, impboy. u kno us CC kids are always looking for outside evaluations =) lol

paro academically/test wise you are above average. well above average if i may say (unless you are a wharton kid...then you are average). but i think if you really are passionate about dancing, and you made that come across to them, you have a great shot (again, depending on the school you applied to. sorri i cant remember ><;). ah, you need to ask yourself whether or not your essays came from your heart also, or did you struggle to write them. thats just something to ponder. i honestly did not struggle in the least to write my essays, they came easy from what i knew and felt. revising them and touching them up took a bit of effort, but on the whole, they were fun for me to write :)

avg for wharton? u must be referring to math. yep - cant stand that numbers business. lol

good thing im CAS ed. lol. and my essays were DEFINITELY fun to write. i know wat u mean b/c i put effort in them but i didnt struggle b/c i knew exactly what i wanted to tell them.
thanks for the input =)
