There are debate banners hung up in our front hallway. These kids are the most pretentious, arrogant pricks on the face of the earth (there are a couple exceptions) and they always think they are smarter than you, even when they are clearly not. Anyone else with me?

yes, some can be very arrogant. they think that talking fast is synonymous with intelligence.

Um...I guess I'm biased since I'm a debater, but few of my debate friends are arrogant or pretenious...quite the opposite in fact. And yes, debators like to "advertise" the activity, but that is because it crucial for keeping the program alive. Joining debate isn't as common as joining sports for instance. Many times freshment/new kids just don't know about debate, so we like to let them know. And if you are talking about a banner celebrating a win, etc. my school does that for all major successes in any activity (sports, music, etc.)

forensics?

Let the babies have their bottles.

^ ouch. please don't prove me wrong about debater arrogance :(
(if your not a debater, don't be nasty in general)

maybe it's just the people at your school? my impression of forensics kids are that they're more likely to be the artsy type (and for guys that means more likely to be gay)...but i've had more exposure to the speech forensicators though

I'm not a debater, I was only kidding. I actually agree with you about needing to preserve the clubs in the long term. My brother was in a debate-type club, and they only had seniors when he was in 12th grade.

I really really really hope that the pretentious morons at my school who are members of the forensics team are in no way representative of the greater debating community. Really.

Hah, my school is 99% speech, and I HATE them. Definitely think they are better, when in fact, they are only somewhat good at memorizing a little speech, etc, and acting it out. Get over it! You all sound the same! /rant

Seriously tho, tons of respect for debaters, especially ex-temp. Mad skill

I just started debate and I really don't flaunt it, I mean if someone were to ask me what I do "outside of school," I'd answer with this: I do speech and debate. I don't know why you think they're so bad. If you truly believe you're smarter than most of them then prove them wrong in something, make them look like dumbasses if they get out of hand or something because honestly, after doing debate for a while, I've learned A LOT so don't just think that your contempt for debate kids makes your smarter than them. Btw, there's nothing wrong with debate banners, I mean there are sports and music banners yet you're going to ***** about debate banners? Post another thread about how you hate this type of person or this type of thing and about how sports and music banners suck and then you won't be considered an ignorant ranter.

I'm a debater, and I can understand that they are the debater types that ahve to argue about everything, which can get annoying. Regardless, the people on my debate team are pretty chill-- considering that we're the 12th largest NFL debate team in the nation...

Oh Garrett, I love you. =]

The speech and debate team at my school wins so much stuff, that every week on the announcements there is a long list of names and awards always rattled off. Oy vey.

Speech kids are funny. Debate kids are also funny, if they're good. I hate mean, serious debaters. I did debate for a year, but I couldn't take the mean competition so I dropped.

And for most of them, speech and debate is their only main EC so they're really passionate about it.

I love you too Hill lol. I just get frustrated because nearly 80% of the s/d people hang out in one preppy, pretentious group, and they honestly never consider someone at their level if they are not in forensics.

My mock trial team is all seniors. We're too lazy to recruit.

It's just a school-sponsored cult.

You won't have to deal with them after this year. =]

Here no one cares about debate.
I was in it a year and a half, but the coach was angering me, and I was sick of losing and not having the ability to due the work because I was stressed from other non-school related things.

I still push for reconization of the debaters and speech team to be known. It's a joke here. They wouldn't let freshman register last year. Those of us who did make it in fought our way. They never announce how we did. We don't get to recruit. It's horrible. That's how it is around the district also.

i can understand your attitude about the pretentiousness that seems to surround debate, but at our school, it feels like nobody respects debate even though the debate team is BY FAR the most successful team at our school. sure, we can be annoying, but we work our asses off in research and speaking drills in order to become confident enough to be annoying.

and dukebound11- you're from eagan?

but can you say you're in the NFL?

I'm in the NFL. It's funny to say that, though.

(National Forensics League, for those of you who don't know)

Haha I <3 debate and model un and model congress and mock trial
They're amazing =)
