The schools in my local area the debaters have always seemed to be thought of as the most intelectual and the students with the most potential, where as, if you're in debate, or competitive speech for that matter, you see a lot of kids who are smart with a lot of potential who really aren't as nerdy, but they are the kids with a lot of problems who use forensics as an escape.

I haven't seen many people on here mention debate as an EC. How many students on here are competitive debaters/speakers? Do you see debate as a real "nerd" activity, or is the team at your school different from the stereotypical debater?

Definitely not a nerd activity, but it does require a certain type of person. I can't argue worth anything and I don't like public speaking. I certainly don't want to be judged for it, lol. My best friend is on the debate team and he barely has a C average. However, he's an excellent debater - I would even say our best. He doesn't really care about school, I think he just likes talking.

Ha. I think your friend is a lot like a fair amount of students on our team We havea lot like that, well, assumig our coach hasn't looed at their grades lately. She gets mad if you donm't pull at least at 3.0, and she's not usuallypleased about that too.

I'm the president of my school's speech & debate club, and it's definately not a nerdy activity. The best debaters are generally very competitive people, which goes hand-in-hand with good grades though.

I wish our school had a team. I am very competative, and generally considered "smart," so I think I could do well. Also, the 5 years of theatre does not hurt either. ;)

^^ I go to a public school. We have a forenstics team, which is close, but no debate team. Also, I don't think I can start one because I am already starting a club next year. :(...:)

We have a Forensics/Speech team. No debate.. It just got started up again.. A few of the members were the top 5%, but, for the most part it was just people who wanted to participate.

Our school's debate team restarted after a period of non-existence two years ago, and we won the state championship this year, so we're happy and looking forward to this next year. I may be a co-captain of the team. Unfortunately, our coach moved to Montana, so we need to find a new one. He was really good too. :(

I am a MUN nerd. Yes, we're geeky and funny. But you must admit, the delegate dances definitely aren't... They're skankalicious. (I like that new word!)

Our adviser (he's quite dignified and always wears a suit, even in the scorching Davis weather) went to one of the delegate dances to "check it out". He saw some people freaking, and he had no idea what they were doing, so he asked our other, younger adviser. Oh, you should've seen the look of horror and the cardinal red that his face turned.

I'm a total MUN nerd too! It got me over my fear of public speaking (mostly) and gave me new perspective on world affairs. Too bad the caucuses are always held up by people who argue ferociously to get awards instead of negotiating like real diplomats do.

I do both debate (student congress & oratory; used to LD but I quit that) and MUN. XD I like MUN better though. Debate is kind of... too much. I can't put my heart and soul into it, that's for sure.

Lol. My high school is highly competitive and hard to get into. So pretty much, everyone in my school are "nerds." The debate team is not seen as something nerdy, because we all are nerdy! Lol.
