who else got scholarships?

I work in the financial aid office of another university. The first I heard of the Texas Top 10 Percent Scholarship was when my son received a postcard from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. I took it to our scholarship director and she was unaware of it too. THECB was informed and got word out to HS seniors before colleges were even informed! Complete aid package information will not be available for a while. I know my school doesn't release award information until April. Texas state schools have to wait because the Texas Legislature determines our funding. (They are currently in session.)
The Top 10 Percent Scholarship eligibility information is on this website: College For All Texans: Top 10% Scholarship Program.
Be careful when reading that site though -not all the information is accurate. Check the US Dept. of Ed. site (Student Aid on the Web) to confirm federal aid information.

I also got that top 10% postcard in the mail, but I didn't think I could financially qualify for it... plus it's not connected to UT directly, just a texas university.

Did anyone apply for the Texas Exes scholarship? I think there was an interview attached to that, and since I haven't heard anything, I just assumed I wasn't being considered.

Wow, Zic, thanks for all of the great info. I went to the website you posted and it looks like my S might be eligible to get this scholarship based on the financial calculation it shows. He has lots of little pieces of scholarships from different places and this extra money would really help us. I am confused about one thing, though. It kind of sounds as if a list has to be submitted by your high school in order for your kid to be in the running. Do you know if that is the case? Or do the individual colleges in Texas just look at the class rank on your transcript and calculate the top 10% from there? My S's HS isn't always on the ball about such things and I am wondering if I should contact someone at the school and make sure they know this thing is out there.

Since my school doesn't have any details yet, I can only make an educated guess. I think HS counselors will be responsible for submitting the Top 10% lists to a state clearinghouse. Texas schools will also use that list to determine eligibility for the Robert Byrd Scholarship (Financial Aid).

97k!!!! haha too bad i'm not going there

retnw18 - What?

I got a 10K per year Texas Exes scholarship, 6 K per year engineering scholarhips, and (if hopefully) a 25K over four year National achievement scholarship. So my total scholarship money would be 89K over four years, which is pretty much a free ride, so yeah God is real.

Dbate how did you receive all of these scholarships? I have applied for many scholarships on FastWeb but I doubt that I will win any because most of them are national scholarships. Do you have to apply for the engineering scholarships or are you automatically considered when you submit the scholarship application from ApplyTexas? What is the process to winning scholarships besides writing an amazing essay? I'm a decent writer but I don't think I can write an amazing essay to beat everyone else for a scholarship.

I'm calling BS on Dbate.

"In general, no engineering student should receive more than one scholarship award from sources within The University of Texas at Austin or the School of Engineering. This includes some University awards and the Texas Exes Awards for Scholarship and Leadership."

Did anyone else get a letter about the Dedman scholarship? My son got one yesterday. I've been trying to research it, but there's not much on CC about it.

I found out that I was admitted to UT Austin today (yay!) for the Cockrell school of Engineering online. When do I find out if I have received any scholarships? I really need a $1000 scholarship for that out of state tuition waiver.

I just heard I'm a Texas Exes finalist, but there's an interview process. :P And I'm in Liberal Arts, so I don't think I'd qualify for anything else, except the NM thing.

Edit: Just kidding, it was the Dedman, not the Texas Exes. That is, the email said Dedman, but I swore I heard Texas Exes over the phone. :P

I think a guy on here last year got the Dedman scholarship. Maybe if you use the search thing you can find it. Do the one where you search the posts, not the threads.
