ExeterMama - Is there alot of Exeter kids that go too Tulane ?

West Coast, Destination Tulane wasn’t as split up as I had expected. Everything was done as a group. My son has a friend there from home so he was able to spend the night on campus to get a true experience. He had done a campus tour previously so he split off from us and did his own thing for a while. It’s more of an Open House type of thing than a true orientation.

A handful of Exeter students apply to Tulane each year but I think my son is the only one attending from his class. None enrolled last year. One enrolled in each year 2011 and 2010.

I am officially a Tulane Mom.

The reality of my “little one” being so far away for so long is starting to sink in.

Welcome to the new freshman class! As a mom who has almost survived my daughter’s freshman year at Tulane, I wanted to give a hearty congratulations and tell you that she absolutely loves it. She has made incredible friends, has incredible classes, knows all her professors (and they know her) and my biggest worry now is that she is going to nail her feet to the dorm floor when we come to pick her up in May! She won’t want to leave! lol Seriously, let your kids know to look into Wall as a great dorm choice. You have to apply, so it has a certain pre-sifting effect. It’s quieter than the freshmen dorms and has a more diverse population (not just freshmen). Almost all my D’s friends are in the honors program and they study a lot. She got invited into the honors program after first semester. But the biggest thing about Wall is that she has just made such great friends and they are all so supportive of each other. It’s a nice, newer dorm too. Her group has all decided to migrate over to SOHO, the sophomore honors dorm, for next year. Anyway, congrats and enjoy Tulane!

You know we all love hearing stories like this, wpbmom! Congrats to your D for having such a fabulous freshman year. Has she picked a major yet?

ExeterMama - Thought you might want to know that Southwest is adding Portland ME to their flight routes. They start service on Sunday, April 14. Looks like they have a pretty convenient flight right now that leaves Portland at about noon, change planes at their hub in Baltimore, then there is another non-stop to NOLA that gets in at 5:45. With decent advance planning I see one-way fares as low as $144.

Alternatively there is a flight at 6 AM that gets you to NOLA by 11:15 AM, same plane change to a non-stop, and a late flight that leaves Portland at 5:30 PM that gets you to NOLA at 10:20, same plane changes. So really not a bad options at all.

Exeter mom…my daughter will be at orientation June 13&14… She will be traveling on her own from SoCal…

I’ve been waiting for Southwest, FC! When we come down in June, we’re flying US Air through Charlotte (Lord help us). I’m very excited for Southwest’s arrival!

Our NY flight to NOLA last month stopped in Charlotte and I have to say, we had the BEST BBQ there!! When did airport food get so good? And another plus: D2 met her future roommate there, just hanging out waiting for the flight to NOLA.

I’m a big fan of the Charlotte Airport! Very cool story, Vitrac, about the roommate!

congratulations to all those going to Tulane. We are from NJ, but my daughter (graduated in 2010) now lives and works in NOLA. She just wasn’t going home. That’s pretty common among Tulane grads who love the school and city. So that’s either a good thing or a bad thing for the parents on this site!

My son just committed! He is very excited. Unlike ExeterMom, my son’s high school sends a lot of kids to Tulane. According to Naviance, his high school sends approximately 10 kids a year. And no, this school is not from the Northeast. It’s a suburban Chicago school.

welcome and congrats newt!

New Trier is one of Chicago Area’s better known high schools, and is a strong feeder for Tulane. Has been for years. In fact, you may have read on the other thread the brief discussion about the music group The Tulanians. We played at New Trier back in 1976, I think it was.

Also, I hope bellarid, who is also from the Chicago area, sees this since they were a bit concerned about Midwest representation at Tulane. Chicago has always been a strong area for Tulane, and St. Louis does pretty well too. Haven’t looked into it, but I bet Milwaukee has a decent pipeline into Tulane.

My son just committed. He is excited and sporting both a TU shirt and shorts. He was scheduled to attend Thursdays DT but when he saw the itinerary was the same as Focus Louisiana he will probably opt out. His only disappointment is that he has to stay on campus. Bbeing local he was hopefull he had options other than a dorm or home. Mom (LSU grad) is handling it well.

Perhaps he will come to appreciate being part of the more typical freshman experience, even though he is local. There is a real convenience to living on campus, especially the first year or two.

Congrats on his decision!

Adding another Chicagoan to the list of happily committed new students! After visiting for the Honors weekend, my DD chose Tulane over USC. So happy to have that decision behind us! We are from the Western Suburbs. Looks like there will be quite a few them!

Congrats to her and your family. That is always interesting to hear about what why they chose the schools they did. I assume she visited USC? What was it about Tulane for her that tipped the scales?

I am not sure how many from the Chicago area Tulane typically gets every year, but I would think has to be a couple of dozen maybe.

Thanks FC. Yes, she visited USC as part of their Explore/Scholarship weekend and really liked it. It is an impressive place. Her brother is in California for school, so we figured that we “lost” another one! In the end, Tulane felt like the better fit for her. She loved the overall “feel” of the campus, students, NOLA culture, community, etc. And of course, the class size, Honors program and opportunities for research are great! We were ok with either choice and let her make the final call. That said, we are really looking forward to exploring a new part of the country and enjoying all that NOLA has to offer!

My D just verbally committed yesterday!! She is awesome and Tulane proved to be the perfect match.

So happy for her, I believe their will end up being a “wave” of kids that start coming from her HS in the coming years. Her school is a highly regarded/competitive private school in the southeast.

Tulane has been so impressive during the process (Destination Tulane was excellent) and the spirit of the Uptown/Garden District is so unique and presents an inspiring environment. Isn’t that what college is all about ? :)

fyi -we also enjoyed our visit to USC.
