Who has Harvard Obsessed Parents?

My dad is counting down to Apr 1st, checking the mail voraciously, sitting behind me as I check the application status, and more obsessive compulsive things.

Anyone in the same boat? I just feel bad, because if I don't get in, he'll be crushed.

Thought you got a "likely letter."

Don't worry about it. As long as you get in somewhere, your dad will be fine. He'll get over any disappointment pretty quickly. Most parents have a way of adapting to the reality and focusing on the success of their kids rather than any failures (if not gettting into Harvard can be considerd a "failure").

All your results will come rolling in over a period of a few days, and there will be a huge shift in emphasis around your house from "Gosh, I hope he gets into Harvard" to "Wow, which one of these many fine schools that accepted him should he choose?".

lol, my parrents don't even know what classes I am taking moreover where i am transferring to.

My mom is glad that I'm applying to college. She doesn't really care as long as I'm not lounging around the house all day.

My parents don't care at all. They actually wish I weren't getting accepted to good places, because they hate thinking they might have to pay that much.

they care a lot because if i get in harvard, yale, stanford, or mit i get four year of full scholarship money automatically. But not like obssessed. Actually quite supportive.

how do you get a four year full scholarship automatically?

there's this scholarship committee(lee gan-hee scholarship committee or sth like that for koreans like not immigrants) and my dad talked to the head and he said for those school money is for sure. Columbia, swarhtmore r not for sure.

whoa.......that's great for you

My mom loves Harvard, but she's not obsessed with it. As long as I am doing my best, she won't be insane if I didn't get into those Ivies.

then ur dads sort of misinformed/naive. no parent should pressure they're child towards one university, thats lame

no he isn't and he's not pressuring me at all. i have no idea what ur talking about. he's supportive of wherever i choose, although he would prefer the schools i listed. He's not naive. In a lot of countries there's government or private sponsorship for US colelges. Who u calling naive?

He's not pressuring me, actually. Most of the colleges I applied to weren't his "top choice", and I initially wanted to apply to Yale (which I did), because it's close to my old house, but he talked me into doing Harvard. If I had said no, I don't think he would have pushed it.

Heee. Decision date actually isn't April 1 this year. It's March 30. Don't tell him and find out by yourself in peace and quiet. ;)

my parents don't like the attitudes of harvard people. they say that they are snotty and self righteous and that if i ever become like that i'll never get married. teehee.

imiracle911, the scholarship fund is endowed by Chairman Lee of Samsung Group and currently operated by his son. Although I highly doubt that the "head" would make such a promise, it is certainly an honor to receive the scholarship. I should advise you, however, that there are many applicants to the program, and you will face fierce competition - even if you are accepted to Harvard, Stanford, and others of equal standing. Good luck.

i'm not sure if it's that one and i know it's super competitive. But my dad, who works for the korean ministry of industry and commerce, regularly meets up with those people. So he knows what he is talking about. I really don't know if it's Samsung but my dad said that i need not worry. I know it's copmetitive but thnx.

I thought that Harvard etc. don't give merit aid? Are there Harvard affiliated scholarships that we can apply for that are based on merit aid???

imiracle911, I am sure it is the Samsung program, as there are only about 2 or 3 Korean scholarships that contribute fully to each student's tuition. With that said, the competition is crazy, beyond your imagination, as countless motivitated Korean students apply for the limited number of programs. Furthermore, considering that you and your parent are searching for scholarships, I assume that - no offense - your father is not of extremely high status in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. Even if he did, there should not be any unfair advantages given to those who are familiar with the officers responsible for awarding the scholarship(s).
