SplashMom...are there alot of students from Texas? My son has lived in Tx for two years and still considers himself a CA boy so I'm wondering how he'd fit in at Hendrix...any thoughts would be appreciated.

oops that post was for volunteer mom...I guess I shouldn't be operating any heavy equipment at this time!

Texasmom, the latest data I've seen suggest that there is a sizable minority of Texans (maybe 20-25%). But just the right Texans. ;)

The kids I saw when I was on campus were very open and friendly. I think your son would probably enjoy Hendrix.

I'm applying to Hendrix! Although I have not yet had a chance to visit, I am quite enamored with it.

acc_bound, where else are you looking? Maybe someplace in the ACC? ;)

Got home from an early Thanksgiving dinner with my sister's family (Indiana) yesterday and Splash had a large letter from Hendrix in the mailbox. We were hoping it was her acceptance letter, but it was a letter inviting her to apply for the Hays Memorial Scholarship. I'm hoping that means she'll get her acceptance letter any day. We're keeping our fingers crossed.

curmudgeon- my list of schools to apply to keeps multiplying, it's ridiculous!
so far i'm applying to: rice, emory, carleton, oberlin, grinnell, whitman, elon, beloit, and hendrix. maybe rhodes. i love when people ask me where i'm applying, because i rattle them off in one breath and they just stand there, dumbfounded.
(ps- congrats to your daughter!!)

nice list. D's list is just as bad, for now anyway.

I console myself with the fact that my friend is applying to 18 schools. Nine seems like nothing compared to that!

Two years ago when my D was applying we told her to only apply to schools she really wanted to attend...her friends were averaging 18-20 schools! She was freaking out thinking the 8 she liked weren't enough! Apparently the guidance counselor told the kids horror stories of students not getting in anywhere so it scared all the seniors. Well it really got ridiculous and kids were applying to random schools just in case. Her one friend got accepted to 18 of the 20 schools ....I just think that's overkill. Now our son is the opposite and is only applying to 4 colleges...and two were ones we insisted on just in case!

Texasmom, our DD has applied to two only ... Hendrix and Centre. We did tell her she absolutely must apply to a safety, too, but she continues to drag her heels. When she recently got her ACT score, which was quite a bit higher than she expected, we asked her if she wanted to add any other schools to the application list. She said she is very happy with the two schools to which she has applied and has no desire to apply anyplace else. DH and I would be thrilled to see her at either.

SplashMom, My son says that he has met a lot of students who say that they decided between the same two your daughter is considering, Hendrix and Centre.

SplashMom -- Hard to argue with Hendrix and Centre. Did she even consider Rhodes?

She did consider Rhodes. At one time, it was at the top of her list. After her overnight there, she removed it from her list completely. Rhodes is a fabulous school. In my mind, she was already there. I truly thought that's where she would go, but it just wasn't the place for her. Here's a link to the review of the overnight visits at Hendrix and Rhodes.

Seeing as how I participated in the thread you'd think I'd remember it . . . Senility quickly setting in.

That's okay, Iderochi ... we all have our memory lapses. Mine are far too frequent, I'm afraid. :)

Ok...my S just got accepted and is seriously thinking about Hendrix...just withdrew his ED app at the first choice school to see what financial opportunities await with RD. I had a really nice chat with the regional admin rep at Hendrix and he is really excited about S...so my question is...Do any of you have experience with kids choosing a school where they are really wanted as opposed to choosing the one with bragging rights of very low acceptance rates...isn't it the best fit that counts??? My D is at an Ivy and is just a number there...S is only interested in small LACs but wants rigor...any thoughts? I realize I'm all over the page here, but wondered if someone out there has dealt with this???

If your son is going to go into a field where a name brand school counts (i.e. business or anywhere where he will be submitting a resume to future employers who are outside the know of colleges), he should go to an Ivy. Right now I'm awaiting my ED decision at my top 20 school and Hendrix is my backup. Hendrix is a great school, I know a few people who have gone there. It is VERY LEFT WINGED. It also has a reputable pre-med record, and that's why I've chose it as a backup. I have heard Hendrix is rigorous, but I have nothing to back that up with.

I wouldn't say that Hendrix is "VERY LEFT WINGED". That is a question we posed to several people when DD did her overnight there in September. Both conservatives and liberals did tell us that it has a tendency to lean a bit to the left politically, but both parties feel very comfortable there.
