I have to choose between John Czworkowski and Christina johnson...
who is the better professor ?
any advice?
oh also who is the best professor for MMW 1?

On the UCSD schedule of classes thing, theres an “evaluations” tab that students left reviews for professors for. It’s semi helpfull, but with this sort of thing its always kind of a personal experience too. Oh, and its organized by quarter so there are multiple reviews for the same teacher.

I looked at the professors myself, and Johnson seems better than Czworkowski. They both seem equally hard, but people actually seem to like Johnson. She seems like she makes the class fun, at least from the reviews. Last I checked her class was already waitlisted though.

Can’t speak from personal experience though. I have to choose between them also.

johnson doesn’t just seem better than czworkowski, she IS [loads] better. just take a look at old mentions of either prof on CC and you’ll see a clear picture crop up. in fact, i’m pretty sure that the general consensus is that dr johnson’s the best all-around lecturer in the chem department. (i’ve had her for a few classes, and agree myself.)

and for future reference, any time a certain class fills up ahead of its others (scheduling convenience aside), it’s because that professor’s more popular.

I have had both Czworkowski (for chem6A) and Johnson (for chem6B).

Czworkowski just pretty much goes off the slides and does a lot of clicker questions. His class is probably a little easier but he rushed over the atomic orbital theory points, which seemed to be the most important part for understanding chem6C. His tests were the majority of your grade and like 12 questions long but weren’t that difficult.

Johnson had alot lower averages (~55%) so there was a bigger curve. Her tests were typically like 24-26 questions long. She had hw points and loads of opportunities to raise your grade. She was a lot better at luring kids into the lectures since she wouldn’t JUST go off the slides. It felt like more of a lecture instead of a presentation (czworkowski).

Overall, I didn’t find Johnson more FUN, but she was just a lot more interesting lecturer in my opinion and tended to give better tips when attacking the problem sets.

What about Christina Stuart? Anyone has taken her Chem 6A class??? Her review is pretty good.

oh yeah i’m kinda curious about her too i think i might have to sign up for her class since the rest are full…

Will I have a legitimate chance at getting Dr. Johnson with a sign up time of 8/27 at 1 pm (two days after registration begins)?

How come for johnson’s class discussion on thursday 1-1:50, it says theres still 13 available seats but it also says waitlist: 6

Is Chem11 a manageable course for a non-science major?

looks like johnson’s class is getting full now. I guess i’ll have to choose between wailisting or choosing another professor.

Anyone here had Stuart? Johnson is totally filled=[. Deciding between Stuart + Czworkowski right now

Johnson or Hoegar(sp)

Stuart is new.

does Czworkowski offer extra credits or curves

How come Prof.Czworkowski’s review on ratemyprofessors.com has so many bad comments?
Is his lecture so boring? I read that his lecture mostly consisted of powerpoints.

well, the general trend is that bad comments are directed at professors who don’t meet students’ expectations …

for a more thorough analysis, just search his name in the archives. he’s been around long enough to generate some discussion.

@ChristianWu both johnson and hoeger are at the top of their game for general chemistry. either one is a good choice to have. they have slightly different teaching styles that will cater to specific student populations. but in general, they’re pretty close – when johnson started lecturing at ucsd, she adapted a lot of stuff from hoeger’s decades of teaching experience. whether they’re for the better or worse, that’s just personal opinion.

why is it that Johnson and Stuart sections are all waitlisted while Czworkowski isn’t… Is it because of late class times for Czworkowski?

people who haven’t done their professor research will go by schedule times alone, so yes.

people who have done their research will know who the better professors are.

@WowCan’tWait: students try to avoid (?) Prof. Czworkowski’s Chem 6A, because his lecture is very boring and many of his lectures are word-for-word powerpoint-slides.
That is what I have gathered from ratemyprofessors.com.
I hope he fixes his lecture style though, because as all of us know, he can be the only option for students who are gonna register late.

Again, I had Czworkowski for chem6A because, like alot of you, the spots for Johnson filled up with upper classmen or earlier start times.

He isn’t as bad as people put him to be. The reason why he gets so much rant is because ALOT of people taking chem6A are people that just aren’t as great at chem as they THINK they are. chem6A is meant to weed some people out initially and Czworkowski does that with his Bell curve-type grading scale where only a certain % of people can earn A’s B’s C’s D’s F’s. He actually is relatively easy if you follow his lectures and READDDD THE BOOKKKKK!!! He emphasizes reading the book and alot of people just don’t think that reading the book is necessary when it definitely is for his exams. Reading the book and doing the homework THOROUGHLY can help make this class cake.

His lectures do tend to be pretty simple compared to his tests, but you’ll find that’s alot of professors in college. I didn’t find them boring because the clicker questions keep you awake and each clicker question you input kind of gives you a bit of happiness since each one is a point. I found him repetitive though, which of course can lead to boredom.

Overall, it just seems that the people in general in chem6A aren’t as intelligent as the later chem classes, which also accounts for some of the bad rants. He isn’t as great as Johnson or Hoeger (had all 3) but really, give the guy a chance, he’s a nice professor and he prepared me for the MOST part for later, and it’s manageable to get an A. Just don’t be lazy.

Thats some good advice.
