How did it get more expensive for you?

Tuition goes up each year...as does room and board. I also had to borrow more to cover the cost of textbooks.

Meal plans aren't required, right? I wasn't planning on getting one.
Well...as a transfer if you live on West Campus you will be required to have a house meal plan. Even if you live elsewhere on campus...it's recommend that you have a meal plan. You're not gonna have time to cook for yourself every night.

Nope...proud CALS alumna!

Dewdrop.

Is it still crappy? I come from a pretty large family and my parents don't have money(seriously). I thought Cornell guarenteed that any student who gets accepted, will be given full funding if they demonstrate that they are unable to pay.
The new financial aid policy has really made Cornell affordable for a lot of students. However...it is important to keep in mind that if your parents have a job, own a car and/or home, have savings and the like...Cornell will calculate and EFC based on that. So...let's say your parents makes $70,000 a year. However...your parents have assets and so they calculate an EFC of $3,000 (hypothetical..I don't know what their formula is). Let's say your total costs for the year amount to $50,000. $50,000-$3,000 = $47,000 net need. Since you're under the $75,000 max...that $47,000 would be covered entirely by grants and work study.

So....you'll have no student loans...but you'd need to pay that EFC. So...you might still end up borrowing money. If you get a financial aid package that just doesn't work...you do have the right to appeal. But...you must definitively demonstrate that the package Cornell offered will cause undue financial hardship for your family. I know of someone who was able to negotiate his EFC down to 0 and got a free ride at Cornell (but from the sound of it...his family was beyond dirt poor).

I didn't know meal plans were required, but it just hit me that it makes sense...at NYU people hate meals plans because it's so much cheaper to eat off campus, but Cornell's not in the ideal situation for that. I hear Cornell food is good, too.

Cornell: meal plan + room/board + tuition + supplies + fees = $35,000
NYU: tuition = $38,000

altogether it's over $50,000...crazy. Still, I saved myself like $700 this semester by taking out 27 books from the library :)

how small is HumEc that there are no students from there on CC? show yourselves, folks...btw dewdrop I always thought you were a boy.

Oy...why does everyone think that?!?! You aren't the first person to think I was a boy :-)

Human Ecology has about 1,300 undergraduates...it's a small college.

Everyone should definitely apply for financial aid. You have nothing to lose since Cornell is need-blind.

My self-service has my HS transcript, Instructor Eval, and College Official Report marked as "X." Should I call or give it time?

It depends on how long it has been. If your self-service just got activated then I would wait for a while. But if it's been a while, I would call. If you want peace of mind, just call. They're really friendly and will probably tell you not to worry. Or if you have reason to worry, you can re-send stuff sooner.

Also, my self-service now has my college and major.

I emailed them and they said that if everything is not there by november 10, give them a call

Looks like my supplement has been processed (finally), and self service has accordingly been updated with my major/college. Everything's in, so now the wait begins..AH I want to know ASAP!

YEAY, I mine is finally updated too

I hate how they put the "withdraw your application" link right there. It's scary.

"Your materials have been received. Your application has been forwarded to the admissions staff for review. "

spartan where did you see that?

It was listed under the applicant information..the list of materials disappeared.

awe, lucky you spartan! I am still waiting for my materials at the moment. best of luck!

Wow, I'm not gonna meddle in this thread too much. I'm applying for Cornell in the spring - for Fall transfer. Good luck to you guys though, I'll keep an eye out and probably bug those of you who are accepted =)

Best of luck!

According to the CommonApp, my payment just got downloaded today. My application isn't under review yet.

YES! I FINALLY SUBMITTED MY APPLICATION....I wonder if that's gonna hurt me that I did it at the last moment? What do you guys think?

And also, has everyone sent in their midterm report? I don't actually have midterms, but one of my teachers refuses to friggen ESTIMATE a grade cos he hasn't read my first essay...I'm angry, 'cos I've passed in homework and he takes attendance, so he could have estimated and I could have sent it today :(

You'll probably be okay, but the fact is that they want postage marked by November 1st. Send it in, see what happens. They'll be organizing for the next two weeks anyways.

Travelbook:

They said postmarked by November 1st or as close as midterm as possible. It is to my understanding that they only really use it has a "tie breaker" if you are on the borderline of being accepted. I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sending mine a week after November 1st since my 2nd out of 4 chem labs still needs to be graded.

Sending it at the last moment wouldn't be much of a factor in the spring pool. There are about 40 applicants, so it's not like they are pressed for space. I sent mine two weeks ago and mine still hasn't been reviewed, nor has all my materials been received, so they aren't in a hurry.
