Who's Goin'?

How many of you have committed to USMMA so far?

I have....turn down West Pont and Naval Academy Foundation, but I'm very happy with my choice. I can't wait tell Sea Year!!! Anyone going to open house on Monday?

yeah im goin.....just need to get my height taken to get medically qualified. @flynavy, i already visited KP, so I don't really feel the need to back again. See you during indoc!!

USMMA2009- What did u think of KP, I haven't been their yet and don't know what to think.......It has got to be cool with its location, but other then that I don't know. I can't seem to find to many pictures of the campus. I guess I'll find out in a day of so.

you are choosing USMMA over WP? Do you want to fly in the Navy or something? I don't mean to sound condescending but USMMA has the least superior incoming class for the service academies in terms of grades, SAT scores, and class rank.

Xcuse me Snipes? Can you provide where you found the stats information for the incoming class of 09? Just curious. Wanted to read it as well....

@snipes, I understand where you are comming from about KP and WP, but I just wanted to point out that the two academies are very different.

Here are the stats for USMMA class of 2008: "For the class of 2008, there were 1800 applications, 653 met the criteria, and academy put out 370 offers, and 284 plebes entered.* That’s a ratio of 77%.* In 2003 there were 910 applications 588 qualified, and 439 offers, and 206 plebes entered for a ratio of 63%.
The SAT is only one part of qualification, the verbal average was 629, and math was 625 total average was 1250–1260.* In 2003 the verbal was 608, and math was 608.* The minimum qualification is 500 verbal, and 550 math.* Of the new plebe class 60% had applied to other academies, 12% were accepted at other academies, 7% are siblings of alumni, 2% are grand children of alumni, 80% had visited the academy at least once. There at 12 plebe who have dropped out of them 60% had never been to the academy, so a visit to the academy is a must. The academy is listed in the prestige us Prinston Review of the top 357 colleges."

Here is the link for WP profile

I think its safe to say that roughly half of the people who are QQQ'd get appointments to each academy. To conclude, just because WP is so much of a bigger school doesn't make its candiates more "superior" to KP's. None of the service academies will waste taxpayers money on inferior candidates. thats my 2 cents.

@flynavy I really liked KP. The dorms I slept in weren't all that fantastic, but were comfortable. (i think they are renovating some of the dorms, but im not entirely sure) Two cadets per room w/ metal bunk beds and metal back to back desks. There are also 2 sinks in each room. Each dorm building (there are 5, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and band comapany) are all connected by an underground walkway that leads to Delano Hall (mess hall). A lotta people say the food sucks, but seemed fine to me.

Campus is nice with a great view of Long Island sound and the skyline of NYC. Classrooms are not very far. (the ones that I attended)

Overall I think KP has a great campus (be sure to check out the waterfront). I come from a huge H.S. of 4000, so 950 midshipmen wont seem all that bad. If you are still lookin for some pics, the best thing I would advise is to check out the Indoc pics from last year. Its not much, but you should be able to get a little glimpse.
http://www.usmma.edu/life/indoc/2008/photos.asp

It basically came down to the fact that I don't want to be in the Army, and KP has the major I want. A major that you can only find at 5 other schools, so my choices were limited. And I don't think KP is inferior to other academies...It just services a different purpose, thats why its smaller and I guessing in peoples minds inferior to others. You could put the Engineering program at KP against any other academy and it would compare just the same and at times harder because of the heavy course load created by Sea Year. But yet Sea Year puts KP Mid bounces head of other people in job experience......And yes, I want to fly for the Navy....my time as a sea cadet on the Reagan showed me that.

USMMA2009--Ya i've been looking at the pics since I got my appointment, I just keep getting more excited. The campus sounds great, I cant wait to get up their and out of Missouri....I leave in like 4 hours....I can't wait!!!

I didn't mean to offend anyone. It all comes down to what you want to do after graduation. If you don't want to go into the Army, WP isn't for you. However, princetonreview clearly shows that the KP incoming class (while still incredibly well qualified) is slightly inferior to the others. That's not to say it's bad, it's just that I know in my district only one person applied for a nomination so they automatically got in.

I don't think KP is bad at all, and I am going to other small academy, USCGA, I was just curious.

And why does KP I-Day start so late? Does there academic year start later? I WANT MORE SUMMER TOO, FORGET JUNE 27!!!

@Snipes- I-day for KP is July 8th. Indoc is only 17 days long becuase they need to make more time for academics and sea year. Im not sure when the academic year starts, but I would guess maybe beginning of august.

snipes KP is the toughest academic service academy. What we do in 12 weeks the other guys get a whole semester for. We finish what is at most schools a 5 year degree, and at other acadimies a 4 year degree, in 3 years. Plebes here will have more credits done after their first year than most college juniors have. Im taking 20 right now. The stats are stats, take them for whatever you want. This is the least known academy, so not as many people apply and there is not the breadth or depth of applicants as the other academies have. I know for a fact that this school is tough academically, and our DOR/seperated rate is higher.

Yeah, you are probobly right. I didn't apply to KP because it is all engineering. I want to major in government. I agree that stats are stats, but one strange thing I noticed about KP is that they don't pay their cadets a stipend accept during Sea Year. Does anyone know why this is out of curiosity?

the answer is money, we don't get as much money as the other academies. I wish we did get paid since we all take the same oath, and I did not want a tough major either. I wanted to get a polysci degree, but then again anyone with a fussy major usually gets a degree in MAGS ( must attend grad school) since fuzzy majors mean zero today.

@cdb, are you a 4th/c?? any tips you can give about indoc or anything else?? also, can you have music in your room plebe year???

I loved KP!!! I really don't think that July 8th can come fast enough.....but like USMMA2009 asked if anyone has any tips about indoc and plebe year that would be great.

I really have NO intention of applying to USMMA or any other service academy. In fact, I am only a sophomore in HS. However, I wanted to add something to this thread. Why?

I live just across the street from USMMA. Literally, on the other side of my street is the fence surrounding the campus.

I can say that it is in practically the nicest town that a college can be in. Kings Point is one of the NICEST suburbs of NYC. It's kind of ridiculous to have a service academy in the midst of your typical Long Island Goald Coast homes, but hey, all the better. The town is great too, with lots of shops, restaurants, and a very green and peaceful feeling. The train to the city is very short and so is the drive. Manhattan is very close by. The campus is located on Long Island Sound with its own waterfront. For a school of its size, USMMA has a lot to offer due to the government funding. I always see football games going on and the midshipmen jogging around town. They have a nice small museum and a good-looking little stadium. I've found the people there pretty pleasant. I don't know much about the school's academics though.

If you're coming from the midwest, be ready for a change. The surrounding area is your typical, wealthy, Northeastern suburb. The town is heavily Jewish, especially Persian and Israeli. Many businesses are shut down on Friday nights. The relationship between the school and the town seems to be a good one though, as many of the athletic fields are open to people looking for a place to jog or have a pickup game.

I can't really think of a better town to live in while going to school. I hope I could help you in any way.

As this next week begins to roll around I need to make my decision in order to let schools know by May 1. I haven't told my parents but something inside me keeps saying,"Kingspoint."

davy, KP is pretty cool due to their offerings that aren't like anywhere else. Take a good look at it! Where you from? Noticed that you were looking at fighting Illini. I'm originally from Southern IL and have family up there. Just curious...
