Why Columbia

I'm writing a why columbia essay for November 1st, and I'm worried that I may not be saying the right thing. There's no specific undergrad program that they have for me; I just want to major in Economics and English as I would at any other school. I have legitimate reasons for going there, but I don't know how they'll come through on paper. Can I write a good essay off of how I think New York will help my education (everyone will say that), and I love how politically charged it is as well as having Jeffrey Sachs (leading economist)? Lastly, I've learned more from the people around me outside of class than in class, and I feel that Columbia can provide me with a plethora of people that can do the same, but is that too much of a generalization?

I just need to know if these are acceptable topics for my essay. Thanks for your help in advance!

well, you have to understand why the adcom would ask such a question before you can answer it well. basically, they want to see that you have done your research on the school, which indicates genuine interest in the school and not just picking the school coz of its ranking and prestige. To do that, you might want to really read about the school and not just mention facts that everybody know (like Jeffrey Sachs and its situated in New York?) Mention specifics, for example what academic opportunities/extracurriculars appeal to you and why.
