I was deferred and it said to retake the SAT, I got a 1290/1820 score. could this be a mistake? It also said to send my grades as well.

What? You got deferred by a 1290? Lol how admission standards have changed since i applied 2 years ago. I had an 1120. Your GPA may be the root cause of this. What was your GPA?

its okay its around a 3.5, I haven’t called FSU about it

Likely there was either a grade to SAT discrepancy or problems with your strength of schedule.

What is your FSU GPA? (Only math, science, history, english, language courses without electives, weighted +.5 for honors and +1 for AP/DE/IB. What classes were honors/AP/ IB etc.

all my classes except one are either AP or honors

hmm…I got in December. My stats were 1260/1920 SAT and 30 ACT, and my unweighted GPA was 3.4 (not sure what my FSU GPA is) with 3 APs and honors classes my freshman and sophomore years, with 1 honors class junior year. With these I got the out-of-state tuition waiver scholarship (surprise to me) so I’m thinking maybe it has to do with extracurriculars? Did you play sports, join clubs, etc.? I think that’s what helped me because my school-calcuated GPA wasn’t the greatest in the world.

It could be a mistake. Phone an admission officer at FSU and ask why they didn’t admit you and what specifically has to be done for you to be admitted.

Yeah I agree, you should definitely call. But your GPA could be the problem. Was the 3.5 weighted or unweighted?

Perhaps there were a lot of spelling or grammar errors on your application or essay. You were deferred not deffered (see typo in title.). If you have a high SAT and a lower GPA (a weighted 3.6 is low) admissions can sense talent but a student not as committed to learning. You get on campus and have football and frats and drinking and LOTS OF DISTRACTIONS. If your FSU GPA was low, you need to prove you can work hard. They likely wanted to wait for your seventh semester grades to see if you were showing any signs of senioritis. And they likely suggested you repeat your SAT to see what you could do if YOU HAD TO. Your 530 on writing (1820-1290) is low, in the bottom 25% of accepted students. FSU looks at ALL THREE sections now, and uses writing scores as a basis for admission.

Retake the SAT and get that writing score up. And keep your grades up…

FSU has always has a bit of a liberal arts slant. And they have always placed emphasis on writing. All freshman are required to take an English course (ENC) their first semester on campus so that they will be better writers in other classes. I think your writing score stuck out.

I think it’s a mistake…I got in in December with a 1280 math and reading, and my friend got in with a 1010 math and reading, although that is rare, but I don’t think your scores are anywhere near too low…in fact I’d say a 1290 is definitely on the high end for FSU students.

It could have been anything. cebs, you should have called FSU about this last month. No one on this forum knows why you were deferred. FSU knows why, call them today for explanation. Asking on here now is like a dog chasing its own tail, you’ll wear yourself out getting nowhere.

“a 1290 is definitely on the high end for FSU students.”

I somehow doubt it.

Well said Tallalassie! Couldn’t have said it better. :)

Dnerd, why do you doubt it? FSU clearly states on their website that their SAT range is 1720-1940, even this is somewhat of an exaggeration. Anyways, a 1940 is a score that is in the top 75th percentile of all of their students, and that score would equal a little less than a score of 650 on each section… a little less than a 650 on the math and reading would bring you to around a 1290…so yes, 1290 is high for FSU’s students.
