Why do singers, rappers, and athletes make more money than proffesionals?

This has been bothering me for awhile. It doesn't make any sense. There's no reason for ''stars''(or should I say gods) who contribute nothing to society to be making millions. Matter of fact, no one should be making millions. To be honest, I believe in equality. No one should be making more money than anyone regardless of what they do. That way, people will do things that they actually love. Humanity would be light years ahead. We would have already cured aging, colonize the galaxy, etc. Does anyone share my sentiment or am I just crazy?

People make them millionaires. People buy CD’s, songs and go to concerts and all that revenue adds up. And people will pay virtually anything for entertainment.

lolololololo

What’s so funny?

Look at it this way. The only reason people do go into those careers is because of the insane amount of money they will be making. If athletes didn’t become millionaires, we’d be short on people wanting to become athletes…

Athletes deserve a chunk of the millions and millions and millions of dollars of revenue made by sports teams since they’re the source of income.

“Athletes deserve a chunk of the millions and millions and millions of dollars of revenue made by sports teams since they’re the source of income.”

By this logic, Doctors deserve a chunk of the millions and millions and millions of dollars of revenue made by hospitals since they’re the source of income.

Lawyers deserve a chunk of the millions and millions and millions of dollars of revenue made by law firms since they’re the source of income.

etc, etc.

In principle, professionals make a chunk, whereas athletes make about a pile, I’d say.

Out of all of the celebrities out there, I think it’s actors and athletes that deserve their pay the most, as nowadays they (for the most part) require talent and a significant amount of work to get where they are now.

I think most of you are delusional. Look at bill gates, does anyone necessarily needs 50 billion dollars to live on? Chris brown claims that he makes as much as money that you would make in 10 years-in only 2 days. Doesn’t that wake you up?

Samonuh that’s not really true. Many people play sports or act or sing because of they love what they do. I’m sure there are many people that would do what they do for freefor free.

^Uhh, delusional much?

It’s called supply and demand. People want and love athletes, so they pay billions of dollars to see them.

Reedan - You poor naive child.

Three words, ‘supply and demand’.

Sure, you might believe that such celebrities are overpaid, many share that sentiment. But to say ‘It doesn’t make any sense’ is just ignorant. It makes perfect sense. They are a brand offering a product demanded by thousands, sometimes millions. The same principal applies for all occupations in determining wages.

Basic economics concept of supply and demand. Singers, rappers, and athletes are in short supply and in high demand. How many people exist in the world who have the potential to compete in the olympics or have both looks and talent. Also, the general public in their superficial ways just love celebrities---- Hence the high demand for them.

Compare the number of doctors in the US to number of Hollywood celebrities. Thats the answer to your question.

Oh and I just read your post (I answered based on the title), looks like your having some communist sentiments xD. Cuba would be just perfect for you.

Lol the idealistic posts above scare the **** out me… it’s called a newspaper people. I know American News Channels suck ****, but seriously watch Al-Jazeera or something. The Soviet Union dissolved because of the “No one should be making more money than anyone regardless of what they do” concept, there were massive protests !!! Imagine 2 workers, one who is very productive and his neighbour who doesn’ do anything the whole day; both are getting paid the same amount. So the productive guy says hey maybe I should just stop working too. There were massive food shortages in the Soviet Union too…

PoliticalProtege I only said some people do it out of passion. Even though there’s only like 5 athletes out there that are like that…lol

One’s salary is not proportional to their contributions to society. A garbageman or a plumber, for example, would earn more than a phD chemist. Also, public sentiment is a variable. Everyone knows Michael Jordan and what he did/does. Conversely, everyone knows Albert Einstein, but not as many people know exactly what he did/does or even his occupation and just use the vague label of “scientist”.

Besides, you shouldn’t go into a profession only for the money in the first place.

You are just crazy. When people can get paid the same amount for doing no (or easy) work as they can doing real work, they choose the easier route. An example is the fact that food stamp use has grown something like 75% over the past year. (I’m not saying that all people on food stamps apathetically play the system, because some people are truly locked in poverty, but the model stands - there are people who would choose to do nothing if told they can do something “they actually love.”)

Somehow I doubt we would have cured aging and colonized the galaxy. There are barriers to those goals other than people not doing “what they love.”

Look at it this way, was communism a success?

Communism can be a success with the right leader. I guess the reason why the world is like this is because of people like you guys. Can’t you guys see that we’re slaves? When the richest 2% own half of the world’s wealth, yes, 2 percent, you know that something is wrong! These people live like gods. Does anyone need Billions of dollars to live on??
I don’t care about supply and demand. Someone should be there to say stop when enough is enough. Also, those people don’t have ‘‘talent’’. It’s just luck and connections.

Noragon, Why does my post infuriate you? It shouldn’t unless you’re rich. But I doubt that’s the case, since the gods don’t post on cc. Can’t you see that this would work in your favor? That this would work in favor of all humanity?
