A lot of us study hard in school and get good grades in order to go to get into a good college. Some of us study hard only because our parents tell us to do so. Some of us are competitive and can't stand being ranked lower than someone else. A few study hard simply because of the sake of learning.

Whatever it is, why do you study hard? Is it all for college, peer pressure, parental pressure, self-motivation, etc., or is it more than that?

All of it.
I can't stand being lower then someone else, I am never the best. I probably never will be. I want to go to a good school, I want to please my parents, I want to please myself, I want to influence my peers, I want to learn.

it began with parental pressure, but now it's mostly keeping up my rep and self-motivation. i want to go to law school, not for the money or whatever, but because i feel passionate about that particular subject. consequently, i have to study hard and build my career up. :D

Up until the end of sophomore year, I studied for the sake of learning. But then I realized that I had to get into college, and it turns out that I was doing pretty well in rankings. So, junior year and senior year was dedicated to selling my soul to the ranks and the colleges. (And I'm just competitive by nature.)

Yes, my parents push me. Yes, I push myself and am competitive. Yes, I care genuinely, some of the time, about what I'm learning and want to further my knowledge of a certain subject. But it's all those reasons combined...I do well because I am organized, motivated, intelligent, and interested enough to do so.

I'm pretty horrified at the thought of being in grad school and failing my quals because I never learned the chain rule properly or forgot the expansion formula for sin 2A.

So basically, I study for the sake of knowing my fundamentals and not getting screwed when I have to apply them in later life. I figure if they're teaching us these things in high school, they must be pretty important, right?

(Of course, this was back when I actually cared. Now I don't study at all.)

I study hard because:
-This only applies to English: I want to major in English, and I love the subject, so it's not too hard to study hard for it.
-I want to get into a good college.
-I don't want to be seen as stupid.
-If I ever get into a debate with someone I want to know my facts. I hate being wrong.
-My school offers free periods instead of studies for those who have above a 90 total GPA and in all their individual classes, and I love frees in the library, so I try to use that as my goal.
-I want to take the most challenging courses in my school.

Because I'm sometimes insanely competitive and can only stand certain persons, whom I know to be a lot smarter than me, being better than me.
And because I want to study somewhere else than Germany.

to fool myself into thinking i know something.

also, math is fun.

"I can't stand being lower then someone else, I am never the best. I probably never will be. I want to go to a good school, I want to please my parents, I want to please myself, I want to influence my peers, I want to learn."

Lol, if by that you mean 3 hours straight or something, that's impossible for me, with Futurama on at 9, South Park on at 10, and Boondocks on at 12:30....

I don't study or do work at home AT ALL. i use my time in school very wisely but thats it. Luckily its enough for me to pull straight As in 6 ap classes. if i didnt get straight As i would probably do work at home, i dunno

I always think its funny to see the people who claim they take hard classes because they like learning and all that, and then see them freak out during the college admissions process because OMGZIhavetogetintothebestcollegeever. But wait, I thought you did all of those ECs and studying for enjoyment... hmmm
