Why does everyone here say 'too early'?

I'm a sophomore, and will be applying only a couple of years' time.

I came upon this site by chance earlier, when I was thinking about what I wanted to do in future. College is obviously the first step, and I knew that I wanted to study in the US.

This site has showed me the standards I need to meet to make it into any university. It has also showed me that fit trumps over everything; if I hadn't come across CC, I'd probably be blindly following rankings come application time. This site has showed me the targets I need to reach, and I find it much easier to work knowing that I have a fixed target.

Yet everyone here says that coming on CC soph year is 'too early'. Why, I want to know. Why is it too early? I'm not obsessing over my admissions yet. I'm using CC as a sort of guide. What's wrong with doing that, with gaining some perspective which will help me over the next few years? This is what puzzles me; why admonish someone for doing something that is only going to help them?

It is this answer which I am seeking.

P.S.: Do bear in mind that this post was very impulsive. My apologies if I sound rash or hot-headed.

For you, I wouldn't say you're 'too early,' based on what I've seen you post. In fact, I started coming here in sophomore year too. It's those incoming freshmen that post "How do I get into Harvard" that are really annoying. They're the ones that are here 'too early' because they're here for unattainable advice and not for exploration..if that makes sense..

Its too early if :

You start ranting about your chances.

You want us to tell your chances when you dont have your SAT scores.

You are a freshman.

yeah, i agree with fellowccviewer. a lot of times freshman and sophomores come and ask for their chances, with only a couple semesters of grades, and no sat scores. so we say that it is too early, and to come back when they have more information.

but when they are like you, and only looking for helpful information, its not too early.

Ah, thank you guys. It's that clarification which I needed.

I agree, it's dumb when 9th graders come on here looking for a magic formula that will get them into HYPSM. I'm curious, how many of those kids actually get into one of HYPSM?
