congrats @Lauren8040. Perhaps you have some insight into how someone with a 3.75 uw GPA and a 1550 SAT who applied on the same day as you would still be on hold with CSE while you are in with a 3.95 (is that weighted or uw?) and an ACT of 28. Is OP lower on the list of qualified applicants, do you think, or do his/her stats still need to be compared to others at this point?
Whenever I log on to my application tracker to view my status, the page keeps timing out and I can’t get in. Perhaps they are updating my decision? Who knows.
Sunday mornings are typically scheduled for system maintenance. Wait till this evening or tomorrow morning and you’ll be able to login again as usual.
Make sure you show interest by opening up portal, opening every email, etc, as a way to show interest. Make sure they know you are really interested in attending if they accept you.
It depends on the college that you have applied to. For example, friends of mine that applied to CSE heard back very quickly (within 2-3 weeks of applying) and they applied in the last week of October, and other friends of mine, who also applied at the same time, applied to CBS and they have not heard back yet. I applied to CLA on October 22, and was accepted on November 18th.
Again, same here. Son applied second week of Sept to CBS and have heard nothing yet. Yet sister, same application timeframe, basically same stats, different extracurriculars, got acceptance in days for Carlson. There are very complicated processess at work and it is normal to start to wonder, and get stressed as the picture isn’t always pretty at the end. After talking with more people, it seems it is taking a longer time this year for “rolling” admissions which means there will either be a huge rollout at the end or things will start to pick up pace starting with the next couple of Fridays. We have wisely made many more choices than the U at this point and prepared said well qualified child with a different plan which may turn out to be the plan even if he gets into CBS. This lag in decisions actually helped mine personally as he attended a few scholarship competitions, wrotes some more scholarships essays and practiced interviewing skills. All helpful for the future regardless and those opportunities came because of the delay.
My son applied on Oct 30 to CSE. ACT = 32 but GPA only 3.2. Still haven’t heard. I imagine it will be after Christmas before UMN makes a decision given the middling grades.
MY DD applied 10/31 to CLA and still no change in portal. This waiting is so hard!
As of today, I still haven’t been admitted. Will the status change on the portal if they are close to making a decision? I hear it changes to something like, “your application is being carefully considered.” Regardless, there are other high caliber students on CC applying to CSE that didn’t receive a decision for quite a while. One student had a 36 ACT and a 3.96 gpa and waited about 5-6 weeks for a decision. Perhaps CSE does admissions differently from the other schools?
@threedoglimit did he apply to CLA. I don’t love how you phrased that btw.
@CosmicStorm the delay can depends on a variety of factors. If the 3.96 gpa was UW then it might have to do with course rigor, performance in specific courses, or random things like region of country/admisisons counselor. If the 3.96 was weighted, then it might have to do with the unweighted performance in certain courses. Five-six weeks isn’t really all that bad for CSE, btw. Many of those early admits are taking college courses as well as high school or doing something else that somehow distinguishes them even among this highly selective group.
To answer your last question - yes, UMN does admisisons differently from other schools. UW-Madison, for instance, has yet to release EA. UMN can do rolling admissions if your application is particularly strong. It’s a nice way to get an early admission but it doesn’t guarantee that you will.
@threebeans you’re absolutely right, and I apologize.
The early admits must be really strong I would imagine. Although my friend applied on 10/30 and got an acceptance on 11/8. What’s rly odd is that he is a nearly identical candidate to me. 3.77 gpa, 4.2 weighted gpa. 1540 superscore sat, but since UMN doesn’t super score, his composite is like a 1500. He doesn’t have outstanding ECs from what I know. Guess we’ll never know what goes on behind those doors at the admissions office.
@CosmicStorm I agree I think UMN’s rolling admission can be confusing as to why they admit some and don’t admit others even if they are similar in stats.
^ That’s a great mystery and it’s happened before. Keep in mind that composite scores and gpa’s aren’t all of it. They look at section scores and academic performance by course. Someone might have the same stats but what’s underneath is distinct from someone else. If two people from the same school are really very similar (took the same courses, got pretty much the same grades, have very similar test scores and no reason to suspect secondary factors to tip the acceptance in one’s favor vs. the other’s) then it might be worth a call from the GC to Admissions. Sometimes these applications are just in a different place in the queue, so getting that assurance is good (plus it might cause the AO to pay a little more attention to the other application, and move it along if it’s stuck somewhere LOL).
@jbstillflying and that is a great point too. I had a close friend of mine and we were both applying to CBS. We had different majors chosen but we were vary close in stats and ECs. Our gpas were less than .02 off and our act scores were within a point. We volunteered at similar places and we were in similar clubs. I was worried that being 2 people applying to the same spot would mean only one of us would get accepted because we were very similar but I was wrong. Yes they had slightly higher scores than me but I was still well within what they projected from CBS. my app took a little bit longer than theirs so honestly it’s just how far the que they have gotten. Just be patient the time will come!
Yeah, my friend took two more APs than I did junior year, so perhaps that’s why.
So sorry for the late reply @JBStillFlying. My gpa was unweighted, my weighted gpa was a 4.15 I think. Not sure. But it was 4.1 something. Did you end up getting your decision? I would say that their odds of getting in are very high, the gpa could have been turn off from getting a decision right away but I don’t think that will prevent him in the end from getting in.
@Lauren8040 my son applied to and accepted to CLA end of Sept. His uw GPA is more like yours. OP’s is lower and perhaps fewer AP’s. That can make a difference in timing, as you’ve pointed out.
I got into UIUC yesterday and that very same friend got deferred. College admissions is such a headache lol.
