Why is BC so stubbron? transferring within the school

i have been admitted ea to the school of a & s. i am considering business and when i emailed admissions they said there is no possible way to change into csom. i thought since i was ea maybe they would want me and bc there is still room bc they r making their rd decisions still…i already got into villanovas biz school which is ranked higher than bc’s, should i try to use that as leverage? any thoughts would be helpful

Is there a way to transfer later on in freshman or sophomore year?

Here is BC's official policy on internal transfers:

"Matriculated students wishing to transfer from one undergraduate college to another within Boston College should contact the Associate Dean's Office of the school to which admission is sought. Students may apply at the end of their freshman year.

Students applying for internal transfer should be in good academic standing (some schools may require a 3.0 GPA). All students must complete at least 3 (4 in Lynch School of Education and Connell School of Nursing) semesters of full-time study after the transfer.

Applications are normally submitted to the Associate Dean by the last class day of the previous semester."

The Carroll School of Management (CSOM) is already overfilled. There simply is not enough space in the program to allow people to switch over to another school upon their wishes. Students are able to switch over to other schools following their freshman year, but again it is very hard to transfer into CSOM. I know of one person who transferred into CSOM who needed a 3.8 gpa. The majority of applicants to the business school have very high GPAs and you won't have a shot if you don't have anything below a 3.4 or so.

Not saying this is the case with you, but it is a well-known trick to apply to the low-bar or high-likelihood college at a Univ., and then try the bait and switch to the one you really wanted to get into. Schools are sensitive to this. BC's biz is high demand.. A&S has more slots so admission is more likley. COlumbia has a similar no-switch policy say, for instance, a woman applies to Columbia Engrg -- she gets in b/c a the obvious wish by COlumbia to get women into engrg -- and then she tries to switch to COL (the A&S school).. same issues arise. You can try leveraging Nova, but honestly BC is not begging for students. You may likely get stonewalled.

Good luck.

yeah i wasnt trying to pull a fast one, i just changed my mind since i sent in my app which was early oct, im still not even sure if i want business. but how can csom be overfilled if they didnt even send out RD yet? you think the ea admits would be able to switch before those were made

It's very simple...they aren't being stubborn. This idea of transferring looks like you just applied to the easier school to get into (A&S is easier to get into than Carroll) and then once in BC, want to switch. Regardless of whether or not you were trying to do this, it looks like that is what you were doing to them.

yeah but they act like csom is like upenn wharton or some super legit thing that it is not it seems rediculous to me that an ea admit cant change schools within the college

it is what it is, you just have to deal with it. you can try and speak to the deans of each school and ask them if there is a way.

im going up this weekend for the admitted day ill try to work my magic haha

You're right CSOM isn't Wharton, but it isn't No Name Business University either. It has a certain number of slots, if those slots are filled to capacity, then they can't fit anymore in. There isn't any malice or condescension their decision. It's simple supply and demand. Beside, if you are already admitted to Villanova, then why sweat it?

yeah i know, i think i would just rather go to Bc bc it is more fun and has better sports haha

also any possibilities of double major or minor?

yes, you are able to double major / minor but it depends on your courses; however, if you want to graduate in 4 years, you better have AP credits to knock out your cores so you leave more space open for classes geared toward your major(s).

its acutally not possible to have a business major/minor if you are not in CSOM. and A&S or other school student can only take up to 6 courses in CSOM during their 4 years. sorry..

Switching into CSOM is very, very difficult. You may want to speak to admissions and ask them if you can basically have your application re-evaluated as a CSOM applicant or something along those lines. Otherwise, take econ, stats, and any other CSOM core classes you can freshman year, get A's, and have a business related summer job. People generally don't transfer out of CSOM, making it difficult to switch in. That being said, look at the CSOM website, look at the courses, and make sure that's really what you want to be taking for four years. You can go into business with anything major, especially with the BC network.
