WHY UCSD over UCSB?

I’ve finally narrowed my list of choices down to either UCSB or UCSD. Students who have chosen to attend UCSD please post WHY you made that decision. Current UCSD students please post why I should choose UCSD over UCSB. I would really appreciate everyone’s honest opinions…

you need to give some more info like whats your majors and goals etc.

I am coming in as a Communications major..I want to double major though in either Comm/poli sci or Comm/history and possibly attend law school after my undergraduate studies. I know UCSD is great with sciences and there is a hospital on campus, but how are they in other areas? Also..is it true UCSD does not like/recommend double majors?

i don't think they let ppl double major

no they let people double major who said that they dont recommend it? I thnk the dont recommend it b/c UCSD has a reputuation for people graduating in 5 yrrs instead of 4

An admissions rep from UCSD visited my high school in Fall 2004 and When I asked a question about double majors, she said that UCSD doesn't support/reccomend them. She didn't say that it is impossible to double major at UCSD..but it just didn't seem like it would be welcomed.

my english teacher double majored at ucsd, but her majors were related, so perhaps it was more acceptable. i do get the feeling that they discourage it, but its definitely not prohibited

they probably discourage b/c people graduate in 5 yrs usually and gpa at ucsd may not be high after taking 2 majors

if you want a social life thats fun all the time, screw ucsd....go to ucsb, i would if i could do it all over

yeah

academic- UCSD
social- UCSB

Okay people are making it sound like if you go to UCSD you will not have a social life and be surrounded by ugly people.

Please, UCSD students stick up for yourselves and your college..I would love to know what you have to say :)

Natasha, where are you thinking about going to college?

well so far I've ruled out UCLA, I don't think I want to live in LA and I didn't really like the vibe I was getting when I was there..the private schools I applied to are not giving me enough scholarship money to bring the price down and thus can't really compete with UC tuition in the eyes of my parents (who are paying for college.) Thus...my decision is basically between UCSB and UCSD. I spent last week in SB and I am going to SD thursday.

communications is really better at santa barbara realli.....
and plus santa barbara has a beach near the school

Nooo, Natasha, join us @ Admit Day! Waha!

Sta. Barbara definitely better for Communications.

Why did I pick UCSD? Surfing classes. :) Gotta confirm that during Admit Day. Social life is important to me, but not as important as academics, so the "blah" social life of UCSD doesn't bother me. The beach compensates for that.

The campus has modern architecture all over which appealed to me. I'm so glad I'll get to see it in all its glory in 4 days.

haha I am attending admit day this saturday, actually thurs and fri i will be staying with someone in the marshall dorms just trying to get a feel ffor life at UCSD.

Does anyone know anyhting about the honors program at UCSD? I know at SB honors kids get to take discussion sections with Teachers instead of T.A.'s, is that the same at UCSD?

Also, does anyone know about the pre-law track at UCSD? What percentage of kids are accepted to law school?

you get a better honors program at ucsb, i dont think its like that at ucsd

is it difficult to double major in CS and engineering??

When I applied to school, I got into both UCSD and UCSB, the latter giving me money. I chose UCSD because of its location and academic reputation. La Jolla is beautiful and I ended up sticking around here after I graduated. I am an avid surfer so the school was a perfect fit for me. The social scene is probably not as active as UCSB's but that is only for the first couple of years. When students turn 21, a whole new world opens up. The nightlife in Pacific Beach and Downtown San Diego is very lively. There are two other schools down here (USD and SDSU) so you're bound to meet kids from other schools. As for academics, the kids at UCSD are competitive and studious- which ended up being a plus for grad school. In general, UCSD students tend to study hard but also make time for simple pleasures in life...like surfing.
