Why UCSD??

Hi, im trying to choose between UCSD & UCSB. I plan to major in Philosophy, with a possible double major including History, Psychology or Political Science; i might choose one of the latter subjects as a minor if i realize its too much of a burden to double major, study abroad and graduate in 4 years. I have a pretty good idea of what UCSB will feel like, but im not a party animal so that type of atmosphere is offputting to me. But with that said, i am not socially inept and do like to have a good time. Is it easy to have fun at UCSD? Because from what i have heard the campus dies down at night, and there is not much to do wtihout a car. Also, i have heard no school spirit leads to lack of campus identity and togetherness. Next, how is off-campus housing? From what i have heard after your first two years you’ll have to move off campus and it is a pain to commute to school ( ie- traffic et cetera). I’d appreciate any responses, Thanks.

i heard public transportation is good, and there's a lot to do in the city of san diego.

I'm sure college is what you make of it. You can generally have fun anywhere you go; It shouldn't be a problem at UCSD. I visited UCSD last week and the place did look more dead than other campuses like UCI and UCD. However, you seem to be set on either UCSD and UCSB. I have cousins attending both and I would highly recommend you go to UCSD. It seems like the party factor at UCSB is more wild than you believe it is. There are a bunch of buses that take you around La Jolla. The location is great and there is a mall nearby (a UCSD bus can take you there).

I'm at UCSD majaring in Psychology/Philosophy @ Revelle. I would highly recommend UCSD over UCSB because if you think about it, we're all competiting against each other, if you want challenge, if you want a better education, I would choose UCSD over UCSB. (Their Philospohy isn't the best like their sciences, but it is ranked higher than UCSB I believe. Psychology at UCSD is superb by the way) But like jas0n says, it's what you really make out of your college. So the best decision is the decision that you make. I can only give you advice... Let us know what you decide on!

I was in the same position as you when I had to decide (UCSD vs. UCSB) and have the same "I'm not a party animal but I do like to have a good time" mindset. And....I chose SD. And, that's saying a lot since I've lived in SD almost my entire life and am willing to stay here for the next 4 yrs. Really, your social life will be what you make it. You should be able to find your niche at whatever college you go to, but in the end, I think it's more important to go to the college that is probably better academically. Anyways...hope that helps a bit!

It seems like it would be easier to make a party when you want one than to try to avoid a party when everyone's partying.

That said, I do think there are some serious students at SB -

Why does everyone care so much about partying anyways...

I could literally name 10 things top of my head that are much more fun than getting wasted.

GREAT goddamn point. you don't go to college to PARTY, don't come to UCSD if that's your aim in college.

"Also, i have heard no school spirit leads to lack of campus identity and togetherness."

That's a BIG issue. That, to me, is part of what really makes the college experience. The partying issue isn't so important, because like all the other posters said, you can definitely make your own social scene. Plus, SDSU is always close by if you really need that crazy atmosphere after a studious week. But the issue of school spirit and campus togetherness should definitely be a factor.

I think people should remember that more often.

If you seriously want a small knit community and togetherness, consider a liberal arts college. UCSD like all the other UCs is a state school. But unlike the others except for Santa Cruz, there is the Oxford college system that makes it more "together" and community based.

Hey thanks for all the responses; thought i'd let you know i just submitted my SIR For ...........................................................
