I checked my admissions decision online and I am really surprised and disappointed to discover that I was waitlisted at UC San Diego.

My stats:

GPA (unweighted): 3.95
UC GPA (weighted): 4.2 something
Single sitting SAT: 2290
Extra Currics: I've done track and field, cross country, a member of CSF for 3 years, have volunteered 100+ hours in summer camps for the parks and rec department in my city, and am 2nd chair 2nd violin in a youth symphony orchestra
SAT II Math: 760
SAT II Bio: 740
5's on the AP Bio and AP US History AP tests

Other than that my SAT II scores aren't stellar, I don't understand why I would be waitlisted, especially considering that I have heard of others with lower scores who have been admitted. Does anyone know why this could be? I have heard that UCSD may be trying to accept students that are more likely to enroll and waitlisting those who they think may have applied to San Diego as a safety school, but in my case UCSD is my number one choice :/ Is this really what may be going on, or is the competition just really high this year?

You’re probably right; they must think you’re using them as a safety. Seriously, the competition is tough, but not that tough. Definitely contact them, and let them know they’re your first choice.

My D’s profile is very similar to yours except her GPAs are 3.76/4.6 since she took on 8-9 AP classes. And she just received her acceptance letter to the UCSD’s Revelle College (Biology major) today. I don’t think the UC schools evaluate an applicant’s college choices, it’s more likely that they just follow a formula. Could it be the major you’re applying to is impacted? Good luck!

Definitely contact them and tell them they are your number one choice. Your stats can get you into more competitive schools than UCSD. Your SAT places you far above the 75th percentile for UCSD. Doesn’t make too much sense.

You definitely should have been accepted. You have better stats than I, and I received the Regents Scholarship. Contact them and ask them why you have been waitlisted, as well as make an effort to get yourself off that waitlist. UCs do not suffer from Tuft’s Syndrome, as some would call it.

Is there possibly some other factor you are not telling us? Did you take a gap year? Is the major to which you applied impacted? Maybe your essays really sucked (no offense). You possibly may have filled something out incorrectly in the application too, so log back on and verify everything is correct.

Definitely call them though; in my 100% unprofessional opinion, you should have been accepted.

I hate to ask this question, but are you Asian? Or do you have a jewish last name?

Perhaps it is the unfortunate reverse discrimination against Asians and jews that colleges routinely engage in, because such groups are “over” represented.

Based upon your stats and your ECs, if anything, you are over-qualified.

Perhaps you will get in off the wait list though.

I suspect that there are a lot of kids that UCSD accepts that ultimately wind up going to Berkeley or UCLA, and that San Diego needs to see how that all plays out before then turn to you.

I didn’t take a gap year or anything, and I did the standard amount of peer/parent/teacher editing and revising on my essay. I have been admitted into the honors program at Irvine and with regents scholarship for Davis, so I don’t think there was any kind of huge mistake on my application that only UCSD caught… However from what I can remember my first choice major was Human Biology; I just looked it up and it is impacted (as are all the biological majors). I asked someone who was admitted to UCSD for this same major, and it seems that what I am lacking is a higher weighted GPA. I will still take all of your advice and contact them just in case, but it seems like that’s the main reason I was waitlisted.

Thanks for all of your help! :)

Man in my opinion you deserve it more than me bro they messed up you deserve harvard more than ucsd although ucsd is great you have some amazing stats
